    Following on from PL's experiment into the mind of NON poker playing people.

    I started reading the thread in PI and the first thing that struck me was how viemently people who i have never seen post in this forum were defending poker.

    Just how many people are reading this forum on a regular basis ?

    alot i'd imagine,
    also there could be alot of people who have no interest in poker
    but they are close with someone involved so they dont see it as a bad thing,
    and see it as a real game of skill with a luck element. so they defend it in PI

    along the lines of...tell the poker forum to **** off out of boards! its was lol all right

    Not really a request for another section, more of one querying other peoples thoughts/feelings on whether another should be moved.

    More of a (probably ignorant) rambling this, and probably not in the right section either. Out of the last few "new posts" I have checked, most of them are for the poker section.

    Now, I like a game of poker every so often, nothing against it whatsoever. But these threads that are raised are often full of pokery jargon that I cba (see I can do it too) to understand thus, these threads may as well be in Chinese or something as I do not understand them.

    I can't actually imagine one of these threads being discussed IRL (another one there) with the people actually keeping a straight face and not bursting out laughing at the jargon used. I have included an example below:

    Quote:

    "I've 9k, villain 16+k

    blinds 75/150

    he limps utg+1, not 100% whether he open limped or not.

    I make it 500 to go with AdQh in mp.

    He's the only caller.

    Flop:

    7d5c4d

    He checks, I bet 700.

    He c/r to 5k."

    Wtf? I would have a better chance understanding hyroglyphics or something.

    Those of you who can actually understand these threads are probably about to hop on your keyboards and go for a right auld dance, fair enough knock yourself out. I just think that the poker section has overgrown boards and should be hosted elsewhere or like not appear in the new posts section or something lol.
    .

    LOL, I didn't know what ATC was either...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,501 ✭✭✭BrokenArrows

    When i first started lurking i had no idea what all that jargon was till i asked ie. started posting.

    This is a forum ffs. If you dont know. Ask. Start a new thread. EP(easy peasy)lol.

    I suppose to the total non poker player this must all look like 133t spk to the non geek (im kinda geek but despise leet speak, its just pointless)

    But the use of c/r, ATC, UTG, rainbow, etc etc just saves time and space.

    And for those who are looking at this thread saying, "what? more things i dont understand":
    ffs = for fcuk sake
    c/r = check raise
    ATC = any two cards
    UTG = under the gun = person to the left of BB(big blind) lol...i cant help it
    rainbow = when the flop has three of the four suits
    etc = Et cetera = and so forth

    leet speek or l33t spk is where internet speaking muppets exchange letters and numbers together to make a word that looks like the original

    example: leet = l33t

    wiki defination
    "Leet is the all-alpha translation of "l33t" (the "3" is represented as a backwards "E"), broken down as "l" and "33t," and thus "elite." "leet" doesn't exactly become "elite" until you know how it breaks down. It is an online culture or attitude sometimes identified by frequent use of leetspeak (l33t5p34k, 133t, 1337, or l33t). "

    It originated back in the day when internet people who developed their own culture didnt want outsiders to understand what they were saying/typing.

    Man i really hate myself for knowing this stuff.lol.

    lol = laugh out loud

    didn;t start off with hackers or something, so they could talk about being hackers without using that word cause it'd come up in search engines and stuff?

    Im pretty sure these guys started it....
    L337 was first used on hacker BBSes, meaning the old no longer used privately ran Bulletin Board Systems using an analogue dial-up modem. Hacking in those times meant recoding parts of software to make it free to use (mostly games). In those times there were no graphical solutions yet and most systems ran on DOS. Using ANSI-codes (escape codes) SysOps (BBS owners) could use colours and create text-based animations.

    Those BBSes were mostly ran using RA (Remote Access) and connected to other BBSes with echomail using FD (FrontDoor). Echomail is the original electronical form of boards just like boards.ie, used number sequences very simular to IP addresses and there were thousands of those networks (node example: 31:100/103, point example: 31:100/103.2). The biggest and best known network was FidoNet.

    Not too long later, the demo scene (hard-core programmers that can write directly in hexadecimal machinecode) adapted L337 solely as a gimmick. This was the first introduction of L337 into the general public. It was not until the Internet "exploded" in 1995 that some people started using L337 in their home pages. Now it almost seems to be some kind of weird fashion statement.

    No matter how many acronymns and whatever poker speak we use here in the poker forum, text speak is still frowned upon. It makes me frown anyhow, so please don't make me frown again.

    I too was a fidonet rodent! Alienline, TOPPSI, Nemesis Dungeon etc etc. From there I moved onto Usenet and became something of a hacktivist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacktivist). I would have known a fair number of what the media now calls Hackers though the subject is so polluted with political agenda, testosterone and misunderstanding that I doubt many people would know the real story. Ever heard the name Pengo? Koch? Mitnick? LOD? MOD? CDC? The likelihood is that if you sent a mail or made a telephone call in the early 90's you passed through a system they controlled.

    The Chaos Computer Club in Germany represented what many of us wanted to do and that was civil disobedience via the ultimate non-violent means. Unfortunately most of the governments of that time were quite willing to express the "violence inherent in the system" :) and when Koch ended up dead in a forest (he was into some fairly heavy stuff as well) and LOD/MOD/IO and others had their civil rights utterly ignored during operation Sundevil everyone got very scared and EFF came into being. Much of this is the reason behind why I am a bit bonkers about Boards.ie and freedoms and non-commericalism.

    All of that is a round about way of saying I never heard any of these groups or people use the term L33T or anything like it (other then as a derisory comment aimed at $cr1pt-k1dd13$).

    DeV.
