Nikon d40 or d40x

Im 21 in May and my Dad is going to help me towards a DSLR camera. I have a film SLR 22-70 lens and 70-300 macro lens too for my NikonF70 I also have a fuji s5600 which has not ever set me wrong.

The d80 is out of my price range and Its basically come down to the d40.. then the d40x came out.

Over here the d40x is 850 euro which is a rip off considering its less than 750 euros worth of pounds in the UK (£500) but I go to uni in the UK so I could get it there.

Or there is the d40 whihc is 600 yoyo here or the equilivent of 590 in the UK

I'd just like to say I hate the rip off republic

The crux is; does +160euro/£100 justify 4more Mpx, iso100-1600 as opposed to 200-1600, longer battery life by about 200+ shots and slighty faster fps rate ?

I dont know. If I had the cash D40X but then is it worth waiting that bit longer to get the cash together ?

The D40 and D40x won't take your existing Nikon lenses (well it will, but autofocus won't work). Try to get either a D50 (end-of-life, should be cheap enough) or a D70s. The reason your existing lenses won't autofocus is because Nikon removed the autofocus motor from the D40 series bodies to make them cheaper. This requires Nikon AF-S lenses (i.e. lenses with built-in AF motors) to enable autofocus.

I'd recommend going for the D70s too.

I am thinking about D40 or D40X as anewbee to DSLR. Do you think the extra money is worth it.

By the way check out pixmania they're pretty good for this

heres a page from the d80 review, compared with d70, good illustration of different resolutions,
    http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond80/page24.asp
difficult to say if the extra resolution is worth the extra money, photos are 900 pixels wider, 600 pixels higher, decent bump in resolution but might be better to get the 6mp camera and use the money you save for a lens or something

I know I definately won't be printing anything large enough to even require the full 6mp my D50 offers anyway!

Don't make the mistake of thinking the old ones are easier to use. They're just worse.

I bought my first DSLR in Jessops yesterday. I asked about the D40 and was told it was, and I quote: "a point and shoot with detachable lenses". I've been told the same by just about everyone who has an opinion on the subject. I'd go for something a little higher up if I were you. The D70 I saw for 750 a while back I think?

d40's great value for money, uses same sensor as the d70/d70s/d50. kit lens is very good. doesnt have its own focus motor, but not a big deal unless you want to use old lens. doesn't have status lcd on top which is handy, but has a larger/higher res main lcd than the d70/70s/50, and is lighter. Metering and image processing similar to the d80
definitely wouldn't rule it out as a "point & shoot" for those shopping for an dslr. Would probably choose it over the older d50 or d70 myself

but is the d40x worth +160 euro for +4mpx +.5fps 100iso-1600iso vs 200iso-1600 iso and longer battey life?
