I know this is a bit of an overdone topic but i was just killing time there in college looking at youtube videos of the classic new york stuff, like gang starr and wu-tang, rakim, early mobb deep stuff, CNN even ll cool j people like that. What happened to tunes like that? Is 'This is why im hot' the new new york sound? I hope not. to see jay-z messing around legends like method man and ghostface and pumping millions into people like young jeezy is just depressing. I know a lot of people say acts like saigon and papoose are going to bring new york back but they are both fairly overrated in my opinion. Do yizzer think it was the just the time of its release and forecast of hip-hop at the time that made that music so classic more than anything? or is the music today just wack compared to it?

Yes and no.Some of the best artists out right now are from New York(the Wu, Nas etc) but NY is not bringing in enough good young acts and living off the greats pre-Illmatic.The scene seems completely bereft of ideas as well unlike the south,Bay area or Baltimore.

Forget about NY,Hip-Hop is too obsessed with the east coast.Check the mid-west,Baltimore and LA underground instead.

Papoose is rubbish btw.His flow is terrible for the most part.Saigon is ok but both are living off of hype rather then skill.

I know what ya mean but new york hip-hop at the moment is kinda like watching brazil at the last world cup. They're supposed to be leaders imo

Not anymore. Its idealess nowadays. You can't say the same about the south, even if you hate crunk,at least they have a new sound not a second rate version of the old 90's ****.

Look to the mid-west as I said. This obsession with New York from everybody doesn't help Hip-Hop.

I agree, Mid West seems to be where its at. Colombus, Ohio and Minneapolis in particular. Rhymesayers and Blueprint's Weightless Recordings i find pretty interesting. The likes of illogic, Camutao, Copywrite would be some of my favourites.
