    Hi everyone,

Just wondering had anyone any thoughts or experinces on changing from IT development to QA.

I am thinking on changing companies and the possibility of QA work in the area is pretty good.
I have spent 5 years in development (3 companies, 3 yrs java with 2 yrs mainframe)
I have noticed that it seems to be easier to move up the ladder in a large organisation if you are on the QA side.
Also there seems to be less stress in the QA side

I would rather stay in Development but i need to set a career path for myself.
I have been told that there are some areas of QA like automation testing that require coding and QA.

Any experiences, thought or suggestions are welcome

    Hey,

I started work in QA, then went on to work as a Software Engineer. I am now working as a Senior Test Engineer (although am making the move into IT recruitment this month). All my roles have entailed development of automated test scenarios. And you are right, there is a big demand for people who can implement complicated test structures, java and mainframe would be big selling points. When working as a software engineer, the role really entailed analyzing results and a lot of development work to keep our automated test harness up to speed.

If you get into the right role and company, you will definitely be able to progress in with your level of experience. Although you will still need to be clear about your reasons for changing career paths and moving into a more QA focused role as this will come up in an interview. And also the fact you don't have any actual QA experience may be a draw back for some of the higher level jobs. So again good to think about why you feel you would be good in a QA environment.

Also you need to keep in mind, that it still requires a very analytical mindset and you do need to be someone who can look to the opportunities in the role and past any of the monotonous day to day activities the role may entail i.e. bug reporting.

I think it would be important for you to get into a role, where the individual can use their own initiative to progress within the role and constantly suggest improvements that could be made. This not only makes the role more interesting but of course, looks good if you want to move up the ladder.
