    Hey Guys,

I have been a member in my local golf club since I was in school. I used to play a lot more those days, but in recent years I have not had the time. I have been a "Student Member" for the last few years, but now that I am 26 I am now too old to be a student member and have to apply for "5 Day Membership".

Can anyone explain exactly what a 5 day membership entails? Am I never allowed to play on weekends? I work a full time job and so 5 day membership seems kind of pointless cause I can not play during the week. However I know how important it is to keep my membership as if I loose it it's next to impossible to get in anywhere else. Possibly after that I will be able to go up to Full membership.

    Any comments?
    Thanks

AFAIK 5 day membership is basically Monday-Friday, no weekend privelages. Therefore if you work 9-5 Monday - Friday, then your correct, it's pointless. If your still a member of the same club, assuming that you've extended your student membership upto now, you should be able to apply for Full Membership? That's your best bet.

well you could use it every evening during the summer and like you say it is a path to full membership, which is what it is mostly used for.

    Good point.

I wonder what hoops you have to jump through to get full membership?

For Full Membership, the usual procedure is that you need to be proposed and seconded by two current full members. Then the membership committee must approve the application, usually involves meeting the Captain and having a quick chat.

I just went thru the process last year in my club. Buy the old guy a pint of stout and I'm sure ya wont have a problem.

    :D

As a mater of interest, how much is a 5 day membership and how common is it? I'd be interested in this type of membership as I work shift and don't want to be playing on busy weekend's.

it is usually about half the cost of a full membeship, older clubs have it as a wasy of easing in new members. newer clubs don't normally offer it as an option..

The bureaucracy involved for membership of some courses is ridiculous. This goes hand-in-hand with the snobbery that is sometimes associated with golf, imho. Thankfully from what I can see nowadays this is less so and the game is now more open to those of us who don't have fat wallets.
