Yeah, but you do that anywhere.

Thailand's great, I'm a fan. Beaches, sun, friendly locals, beautiful food, elephants, buddahs.

I went to a sanctuary for sick elephants in Thailand. They're nice, a bit tusky, but nice. It might make the difference when I'm choosing my next holiday -

GF: Where will we go this summer - how about Cuba?
Me: Nah, not enough elephants - why don't we go back to Thailand? Or maybe India or Sri Lanka?

Some fantastic beaches. You can find yourself on a beach with a beautiful clear calm sea with nobody near you for miles. Great islands. I did some trips of Koh Samui where they took us to some little deserted islands and we just spent the day kayaking around them and onto them.

The people are really friendly and I don't just mean the millions of tuk tuk drivers or bar girls. The Thais like to talk to you generally.

There are some great temples and sights to see.

Don't stay too long in Bangkok. Two or three days is enough. Any more and you'll get fed up of it. It's a great country once you get outside the capital. There are lots and lots of tourists but it's really not hard to get away from them if you're any way adventurous.

I preferred Malaysia to be honest. Better food, more genuine, honest people. Thailand is fab, don't get me wrong, but its ruined by tourism I think.

Don't go on an elephant trek, I won't start on the cruelty stories, but why would you want to sit on a park bench on an elephants back anyway!? Thailand is not the best country for animal rights .......

In SE Asia I have been to Japan, Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Thailand. I found the people to be nice and friendly everywhere but Vietnam.
The last time I was in Thailand was in February with my sister and my dad. We flew to BKK and spent 3 days there and loved it. We did all the usual touristy things. We went down the river, went to the markets, Siam square, Kao Sahn Road, Patpong etc etc We then spent a week in Samui. What I like about the whole Thailand thing is -
    1. Leaving Europe on a cold dank February evening and arriving to 90F sunshine ( maybe not in BKK but definitely in the islands)
    2. It's dirt cheap. Dinner was costing me a couple on quid and beer was about a euro.
    3. The whole place doesn't have so many petty rules as we have here. I did not see one yellow line or parking meter in Samui.
    4. Food is excellent.

    I second that.

Everything is great. People, food, weather, scenery. It’s a great combination many things, such as: big cities like BKK; paradise islands like Koh Samui and Ang Tong; hedonistic heaven of Pattaya and mad party scene such as Full Moon party in Koh Pha Ngan; and all that before you get of the beaten track into the country proper.

    Second that.

Don't see how people can go on elephant treks when they obviously look so uncomfortable (The elephants that is)

    yes it is.

Loads of people backpacking around up to all sorts. I was in Sihnoukville in Cambodia and there was loads of young westerners out there. I was suprised at how we kept running into people that we'd ran into in Vietnam and Laos.

I'm thinking of going to Thailand for about 3 weeks, want to relax for maybe a week, then do some crazy, fun stuff. Any suggestions for an itinerary/costs etc?

For fun stuff... Go to the Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan. It gets my vote as the most amazing party I have every seen. To get there (the fun way), take an overnight train from Bangkok to Suratthani and the ferry to Koh Samui and stay in a tree house for a few days chilling out, visit Ang Tong and then cross over to Koh Phangan.

For crazy stuff... Have a look at BKK Tonite forums, there is always lots of helpful stuff there...

I just spent 6 years living and working in THailand.
    Back in Ireland now.

THailand is a great place but things are a bit messed up there at the moment. Coup, Foreign Business Act, Strong Baht(currency), Terrorists in the South etc... they all add up being issues there!

However, if you just want to go for aholiday it is a great place to go to. It depends what you are up to but there are still plenty of places that are not affected by tourists! Yes, the locals will stare at the white person walking down the street!

Plenty of jobs teaching English there but be careful to get work with a good university. You should have a degree and a TEFL cert. Money isnt great but if you are after a good time for a year then its definitely the place to go to.
