    specs;
    2gbddr2
    3ghz pentium 4 desktop processor
    ati x800 graphic card
    2*60gb 7200rpm hdd in raid format

    bought command and conquer 3 and i can run it on almost full settings

    bought rainbow 6 las vegas and it wont go past the first loading screen

    i thought it was the processor as it is the minimum spec for that game but apparently rainbow 6 requires shader 3.0 and the x800 only has 2.0

    so my question is cani get a software upgrade to 3.0 or do i need a new car and if so can you recommend a good reasonably price laptop graphic cars with the spec i need as i know nothing about laptop parts

    thanks

    New graphics card.

    In a laptop, this basically means a whole new laptop. Most cards can't be swapped out. What model Alienware is it, try googling.

    And no, no software update. The shader level supported depends on the GPU you have. While games can be patched to include HDR, and the latest shader models, you firstly need the hardware to render them.

    Ubisoft did a straight port of the Xbox 360 version which is a SM 3.0 device in itself & don't include a SM2.0 path.

    They have been doing for this for a while know King Kong, Splinter Cell games etc. though they did patch Splinter Cell Chaos Theory to support SM 2.0 GPU's.

    However Rainbow Six Vegas is unlikely to get the same treatment.

    As DirkVoodoo pointed out in some Alienware machines the GPU can be removed you may want to call Alienware directly & ask if it feasible for your model & how much if they do. the only other method would be through unofficial channels and that means sourcing the parts which is not easy.
