my current machine, have it for two and a half years now.
for about two years, i was using a mitsubishi monitor, a fairly decent one; diamondpro 930SB.
issue happened on XP SP1 and XP SP2, and about half a dozen different nvidia drivers - whenever i deleted a video file associated with windows media player, the monitor would switch off. never happened on any other monitor, or deleting any other files; or performing any other action (bar using the power switch obviously). it was as regular as clockwork, and i never got to the bottom of it.

that is very strange, never heard of the problem before. how much ram is in your pc?
I can find out if its some virus/malware problem. If you go dl and run this program
    http://www.download.com/HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10379544.html
click "Do a system scan and save a logfile" and post that here, might show me something.

Could be some hardware problem i suppose, not my area of expertise :)

I have seen this its bloody mental, its the accosiations getting fuddled mainly due to Xvid or Kilite or even WMV being installed.

Right click the type of media file that does it and associate it with something else.

Came across spyware before while troubleshooting an issue that redirected you to a page to purchase "removal software". Started cleaning the registry, only when I attempted to delete the spyware key, I recieved a dialog box saying "Save yourself Registry hassle, purchase (removal software) NOW!". Still ranks as the strangest thing I've ever come across.

(Got rid of it in the end with a full OS Reinstall! ;) )

I see plenty of spyware like that, they can be a bit annoying, but not too hard to get rid of it(no need for a reformat).

sounds like KdjaCL has you covered OP. You or anybody else can still follow my post if they concerned bout spyware/viruses being on their pc.

2GB - i'm on a different monitor now, so there's no issue to fix anymore.
