Canon 400D Impressions

I was in Chicago last week and took the opportunity to drop in to Calumet Cameras and purchase a Canon Rebel XTi (known on this side of the pond as the 400D) body.

I wanted a back up body for my 20D and also a separate shooter so as to avoid having to change lenses too often. (Both are considerations for a couple of weddings I have to do later this year).

I had read about the 400D's much smaller size but to be honest I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it fitted my hands. However, I also purchased the BG-E3 battery grip to give my hands more purchase and this works very well. Highly recommended to anyone with larger hands thinking of buying the camera.

I was slightly concerned about the learning curve as far as the different controls to the 20D were concerned but in fact I didn't even have to refer to the instruction manual - they are pretty much intuitive for any 20D/30D user.

Most importantly the picture quality from the camera is on a par with the 20D - test shots taken with both cameras did not reveal any difference (other than the slightly larger size of the 400D's shots as it's 10MP as against 8MP for the 20D)

All in all I'm extremely pleased with my purchase. Had the usual concerns about coming through Customs in Shannon but in the event the desk was unmanned and I sailed through (with a big grin on my face).

I paid a total of €712 for the body plus grip which is less than the price of the body alone here in Ireland.

    Gawd bless America!

I purchased my 400D about a month ago and from the word go it's just a dream to work with.

Here's a few shot's from West Cork Rally 07 (First day Out)
