Polished vs Honed Marble Tiles ?

I am planning to put down 50 sq meters of cream marble tiles in a kitchen / living area. It will be a contemporary kitchen so I would like to used a polished marble tile. When I speak with tile suppliers I get very mixed messages. Some say that it will scratch really easily and that it will look bad after only a coupled of years (and therefore I should use a honed finish), and others say that there is no issue ? Does anybody have experience with polished marble and what it looks like after a few years of wear and tear ?

    Hi TheycallmeBill,

I'm a new member to boards.ie, but I know a thing or two about marble and natural stone tiles. I import and retail marble, limestone and travertine tiles from all over the world.

Polished Vs Honed really is down to the stone you decide to buy. To be on the safe side I would recommend honed especially in a high traffic area like a kitchen. Marble is a fairly soft stone and is prone to scratching.

However, if you are really set on a polished tile you have a couple of different options: buy the marble of your choice and keep it polished chemically, you can buy these chemicals from specialist stockists, "Rubi" is the manufacturer of a particularly good one, the other is the more expensive option and also the more difficult, buy a very HARD high quality marble. Finally there are some quite attractive granite tiles out there, this is a very hard wearing stone.

    Ultimately the choice is yours.

    Good Luck!

    Suedestone.
