Im leaving my job this week and would like to get a reference, but my boss is out sick for the next 3 weeks. Should I ask HR? Is getting a written reference the done thing these days or what way does it work?

Dunno if HR can give you a reference without the boss's permission. The boss would have to sign it after all. Or perhaps there's someone else who can sign it. Worth giving them a call about anyway.

I usually get a written reference and ask them can I put them on my CV too.

Surely you can get the reference after, unless you need it for your new job right away?

Im actually moving to england so it makes it a bit more difficult. i also just want to cut all ties with the place and my boss isnt a very obliging person tbh. Would just be handier if I cud get it sorted now!

I thought most places would rather call your past companys than take written references, as they can be faked too easily.

I see why you might want one though :(

In the UK it's unusual for an applicant to present one and they'll still ask for contact details for your last employer. If the boss does move on just say so, when I lived in England this happened a lot so I would say that HR could confirm I had worked there but that anyone familiar with me on a personal level had left the company.

    Never caused me a problem.

Cool so I should just ask can I put her down as a ref on my CV?
