How long for grass seed to grow

    Hi All,
Currently in the process of deciding whether to seed lawn or use roll out lawn?
We have removed a border of shrubs and want to replace it with lawn. So there is an L shaped patch of 18 m sq to cover.
My biggest concern would be that roll out will be completely different to existing lawn and hence look ridiculous. Is there any way we can ensure against this?
If we go down the grass seed route, will it take long for grass seed to grow? Would we be waiting until next year until it had grown thick?
    Thanks in advance
    Lilli

depends on what grass seed you use and also what you expect to be able to use it for.
If its just for show then you can get grass seed that will appear after 10-14 days and will give cover in 4 weeks.
Though it would get destroyed if you start walking all over it or kids playing on it etc

With a roll you will probably have a mismatch of seed types, you can over seed the whole lawn and it will eventually blend in

    Thanks Greebo!
Do you mean you cannot walk on it while it is threading/growing or you cannot walk on it ever?

Well any seed will take a few months to get properly rooted to give it some protection, probably a year before it is fully hardy.

But depending on the type of grass seed you get it will be more or less hardwaring.
Seeds containing ryegrass will be much harder wearing than bent fescue for example.

I would use seed it wont take long keep watered and stay off it.Roll out turf also should not be walked on for a few weeks if posible its hard to lay right takes a lot of prep before hand and cost 10 times the price.Go with seed with in a few weeks it will be up top it when its 4 inch high and it will ticken up for the summer

If using grass seed though, how long before you can actually use the lawn, i.e. walk on it, sit in the sun on it etc?

If you use a fast growing seed you will see growth in under 2 weeks, however it still wont be useable until 6-8 weeks later and even then wont take much abuse...(in my experience)

No point starting a new thread for something like this, but i sowed some grass seed last weekend and there's absolutely zero sign of any growth. Just wondering if i've done it right.

After sowing it i gave the area a gentle watering. Did so again 3-4 days later.

Should i just be more patient? Is this what i deserve for buying a box of grass seed in Tesco for 99c?

By last weekend I take it you mean 8 days ago? :D Yes a bit more patience, after maybe another week you will begin to see a faint green haze rather than individual grass stalks, and it will probably look a bit patchy. Don't panic, give it time and it will come up.

When you start cutting it make sure your machine is clean and sharp, the grass will be quite soft for a while and its easy to mangle it if your mower isn't the best.

Folks is there anywhere I can buy a very fast growing grass seed in and around Dublin? I believe Ryegrass is very quick growing but I can only find it for sale online with very large bags- I only need a small amount.

No point for another couple of months, it won't grow until we great up again.
Most places will sell fast growing, you'll have a haze after two weeks.

Oh I don't plan on planting it outdoors :)

I found some at a reasonable price in the states on eBay, so hopefully it'll do the job.

Not starting a new thread...I'm after a little bit of advice.

I de-thatched/scarified my lawn a week ago as there was a thick layer of moss/thatch. Before doing so I cut the grass to about 2.5 inch length. Aearated the soil and overseeded densely as it turned out that there was more moss in ma lawn than the actual grass. Since the whole lawn opened up the old grass is more exposed and therefore longer than what it should probably be for overseeding. The new grass is not popping up just yet and I was thinking of giving the entire lawn another mow to give the new grass a fair chance of establishing itself. Can I still do it without harming the freshly sown seeds?
    Thanks.
