I'm putting in a new kitchen and I was wondering if a dishwasher is better for water and energy conservation than washing dishes in the sink, obviously an A one of course!! :D

My dishwasher uses approx 1.75kw per load - you would have to boil the kettle 5 times to use the same power.
But it is not a "A" Model - it is a "C" i think and is now 6 years old.
I believe that the new "AAA" rated devices are excellent on power consumption.

Ensure you get one with a timer function as in the future we'll have smart metering in the future (or you may already have night saver today). My A-rated one (Siemens) uses about 1kW and approx 30 liters of water per load. The water consumption is just as important as the power consumption as water charges are coming back: Ireland must implement this before 2010 - we are now the only EU country without domestic water charges. Needless to say this won't be mentioned by any politician until after an election.
