    hello all,
i've always had a big bug addiction. i've got a stack of volksworlds up to my knee but i've never owned an old car of any kind.

a neighbour is selling a ground up restored '72 karmann cabrio in red. he got it in scotland where it was used as a coca cola pomotion vehicle for a while but it is not at all abused. he bought it for the missus but she can't insure it (prov license- they hadn't done their homework).

it appears to be in tip top condition. i will obviously not leave this to chance but assuming it is- can you put a value on it?

he is being coy about what he wants for it and he wants me to make him an offer. he's a bit of a hardass so he will probably try to get the highest possible price. but what is too much?

    any help gratefully taken...

If I were to get my hands on a nut and bolt restored (to professional standard and not an amateurjob!!!) Karman Ghia Convertible, freshly resprayed professionally, new hood, new interior, engine overhauled and all the detailling spot on, I would need to bring anywhere between 17 and 20k euro's and it would be a lefthooker.
So if it's right hand drive, restored properly (!), and in super mechanical condition, I'd say if he accepts anything under 15-16k, you will have done very well... :)

Correction on my previous post: I now suddenly realize we are talking about the Karmann "Beetle" Cabrio....!!! and not the Karmann Ghia !

There is ofcourse an enormous price difference there.

A nut and bolt restored Beetle Convertible should fetch anywhere between 11 and 15k, depending on the model (1300/1500/1302/1303...)

    well i know she's not 1302/03

is there anyone in the cork area who would know sufficient to check it out for me?

Where in Cork are you? How much did he pay for it ;)

You've got to make sure it is a genuine Karmann and not a pram as many promotional cars can be.

well done Justin- that's a savage car. I've oogled over it more times than decency allows!!!

who looks after it for you or do you do it all yourself? i suppose the question is who would look after it if you were a novice?

I do everything myself, which would explain why It's been off the road a while now

Hanley's at Lough service station are the people to talk to about aircooled VW maintenance and repairs, they've many years experience.

Also check out www.vwmadeinireland.com - it's run by Johan over in Carrigaline

If you want me to have a look at it PM me, I'm not an expert by any stretch but I do have a good idea what to look out for. ;)

Justin, thanks for the offer but i won't put you to trouble just yet. thing is, i've just discovered it is actually an aftermarket conversion and not a karmann.

    ;)

If you're still interested I've a solid '74 1300 beetle here that needs some TLC but nothing major, I'm slowly gathering parts to get it sorted before selling on.

    Hi JustinOval,
Just read this thread now and seen you might have a bug for sale, how much would you be looking for it? What kind of condition is she in, engine size etc etc?
I am interested in buying a beetle, but not a major project (I have a '79 type2 for that!!)

    This one -

    redbugaw0.jpg

'74 1300cc (still UK reg'd) doesn't need much work to bring it up to a decent standard - gutters are crusty as are the rubber seal clips and needs a tune up etc.
If you're handy with a spanner it will be an easy fixer :D There are some fresh parts - newish wheels, near new tyres, battery, exhaust, JVC CD player...

Looks better in the pic than it actually is.

    €1,750
