Looking for cheap champagne in half a dozen magnum sized bottles, any brand or age will do, even sparkling wine would do

Forget it.. get Asti instead.. its about €10 give or take and much nicer than Champagne.

I think magnums are expensive, regardless of contents. To get a good price standard bottles are best (maybe increase the quantity?) If you're set on magums try Cellars: The Big Wine Warehouse on the Naas Road. You'll get magnums there but they won't be cheap.

For cheap champagne or sparkling wine my favourite is M&S Gold Label Sparkling Chardonnay, I think it's €10, but I haven't bought it recently. It's dry, smooth and very drinkable. It's very close to champagne and the M&S label helps make it acceptable to all. I think there's 5% off 6 or more bottles.

P.S. I'd suggest, if you're determined to go with magnums and if this is for one occasion, to start with one or two magnums, then follow on with standard bottles. For example, create a big splash and fuss opening your magnum, lots of photos, etc... When everyone has had a glass from the magnum(s), then follow with standard bottles of a more affordable substitute. More practical and affordable; magnums besides being expensive, are heavy and unwieldy to serve and pour. Besides no one expects you to pop open magnums all evening, unless you're Donald Trump. :D

There were a couple of newspaper reviews of champagne before Christmas and Tesco own brand came out on top from the experts in terms of taste.

If you're don't want to spend much their cava came highly recommended too, the bottle looks just like a champagne one and I'm sure I bought one for under a tenner a month ago.

don't waste your money on magnums bottles...
