    Hi Lads,

Right I suppose this is a very quick question. I am thinking about buying a EVO 7/8 not really sure. Is this a good idea and what should I look out for.

    Thanks

make sure you don't list what type of driving you do, how long your commute is or any other relevant information that could help ppl in answering you ;)

Umm ok all I do is really drive to work about 40 miles a day round trip and occasioanly some trips down the country thats it really

Afaik the EVO is a bit thirsty so a 40 mile round trip every day might work out expensive on fuel. Might be worth doing a bit more investigation before deciding.

I drive an Evo 7 a bit, it's a total monster on petrol. Defo not an 'everyday' car, unless you like throwing money away for petrol

Do you have an EVO, John whats it like to drive and on average how much do you spend on fuel a week

Just read that back to yourself, sound like a realistic purchase now?

How much petrol you use will depend on how you drive it. I have a mr2 turbo and day to day driving in and out of work I can get 25-30mpg, holding off on the boost.. Driving down home at the weekend is a different story tho' I get around 15mpg, lots of boost and what not.

I would imagine the evo is much the same, 2litre turbo can be driven sensibly as an every day car.

I used get about 14mpg driving fairly easy. I'd get about 130 miles to the tank. Driving hard would see around 6mpg or 60 miles to a tank. You won't see Captain Planet driving one like...

Ah okay... I should be happy when I get a couple of days out of €20 of petrol then :D

I would be of the opinion though that if your buying a car like an Evo then you going to use it more often than not for it's entended purpose which would mean fuel economy should not be something to be overly concerned about. I think it is something the driver should accept as part of the ownership experience. If fuel economy is a factor then maybe an Evo is not the car to buy for everyday commuting. You would not enjoy it as much looking at the trip computer.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

@OP - didn't you recently buy an MG-F? I thought you were very happy with that?

Wow, that's pretty extreme. Imagine having to stop for petrol every hour or less

I briefly looked at the possible costs of an Evo 7/8 vs. E46 M3 for next year some time (the Evo 7 won out as it's cheaper to buy/VRT/insure), but not at 6mpg
Seriously now, A Bentley GT does that by all accounts. I know a lad who had an Impreza STI and avereged anywhere between 15-25 IIRC, maybe lower if if hammering it. I wouldn't be that bothered by fuel, I only do about 175 miles a week, but would have hoped for high teens mpg (not below 10!).

The evo is drinks a LOT of fuel if you keep the foot down all right.
My mate has one and when driving hard you can see the needle going down!
60 miles on a full tank and hard driving is accurate enough

I have a 1.6 focus and I drive my mates Evo quite a bit and it would drink about 3 to 4 times the fuel that the focus would.

Unless you have a good stack of cash for petrol and servicing you may want to think about it.

BUT and it's a big but.. It is a fantastic car to drive, handles extremely well and is FAST. will easily beat most things on the road (if you are into that;) )

    Mik

Alright, say if you weren't keeping your right foot planted (as the bulk of my mileage involves the M50, this isn't going to be happening:rolleyes: ), then what can be expected?

I looked into an evo myself but it didn't really add up for me.
Have a good read of this:
    http://www.lancerregister.com/downloads/MLR%20Evo%20Buyers%20Guide%20v1_00.pdf

    Its a fantastic guide.

Apart from fuel costs servicing is expensive, and service intervals are quite short(4,500 miles or 6 months). If you are doing 40 miles a day you could find yourself doing 3 of them in a year! Its a complex high performance car, be prepared to have some problems.

I'd be cautious if I was you..... A lot of them are brought in from Japan with low grades in the auction and then sold on. A lot of them are crashed and repaired and some are even rally cars!

We could get into the Evo vs. Impreza debate, I just like the subtlety of the Evo 7 over the same model year Impreza.

I think the rule of thumb is that if you have to ask what the mpg is then you can't afford one! Hard core road going rally car - thats how to describe it really, so that'll give an indication as to how it drives and how expensive it is to run!
Maybe if you bought a charade diesel for the daily commute.... :)

    Summed up pretty well:D

As stated above, running costs are a major consideration. Make sure you have a decent insurance quote and that you can afford to use the car as a commuter car, you average 200 miles a week to work alone so I would definitely consider this. What you could do is buy an cheap car (a few grand) for the weekly commute and keep the Evo for weekends. This is if you don't mind running 2 cars!

As for things to look out for, make sure the car has a good history, if it is a recent jap import and not an originally registered Irish car see if it was serviced and look for any panel gaps or over spray that would give away a crashed and repaired car. As for the engine, I have heard of little going wrong, again if its an import it may be tuned so make sure you get the spec of any aftermarket parts on it. The 7/8 Evo is a complete drivers car, you will enjoy owning one once you can afford it! Keep an eye on sites like carzone.ie to give you an idea of prices and specs.

Just out of interest can any Mitsi dealer service an Evo here, I presume HB Denis at Airside can service STI's as that's where I drove one. Are there any specialists for either in Dublin?
