Not really sure where to post this so mods feel free to move!

Me missus lost her voice last weekend (i.e. 9 days ago) after going on a hen with a throat infection! She cant talk since and is left whispering. Her GP said to give it a few days of no talk.... that was a week ago!

the novelty of having the girlfriend silent has worn off unfortunately and i miss her dulcet tones! I feel so helpless, it cant be good for self esteem.

anyway, anyone ever lose their voice before?

It's called laryngitis and I know a teacher who regularly loses her voice this way. Like doc sad, just rest it.

dont think its laryngitis as she no infection anymore. I think her vocal chords are in bit!

I lost mine after a week of screaming and skiing in Austria a few years back. Took almost 2 weeks for it to come back. I had that raspy sexy voice for a while after too.

Well the teacher should definitely be going for voice therapy - try the local Speech and Language therapist. The old losing the voice and constant hoarseness cos of vocal abuse, after every night out etc. can lead to major damage!!

As for the girlfriend could be a cause of laryngitis alright but if she loses the voice regularly - see as above. Oh and tell her not too whisper, causes more damage than good. Try whispering for a while yourself - not pleasant on the old voice box!!

Hah... Are you implying she's a screamer? Oh so many ways to take that out of context. :D

    lol, they're great for karaoke.

Failing that, you can get her to use a system of taps, like they do with horses. (best be careful how you describe it to her, though!)

Give it two weeks if she can manage that much without talking (3-4 if she cannot help herself), longer than that, its time to go back to the doc.

Nice Brokeback type avatar by the way.

I dunno, i'd abuse it a bit more
"if you don't want me to invite your best friend over for a threesome, say so now... whats that? nothing? ok, off i go"
and hijinks ensue, maybe even some capers.....

Funny, I lost my voice for a whole month after a hen night once! At the time my GP kept asking me "are you sure you don't smoke?". I didn't but I did work in a bar (pre smoking ban) and that delayed the healing process. Once I gave up the bar job my voice came back in days.

Does your missus smoke or spend time around people who do smoke?

Karvol... little sachets of araomatic oils. You just snip it open and let the oils inside soak into a tissue and keep it beside the bed at night. It's for babies with stuffy noses really but I found it really soothed my throat.

    I hope the situation improves

I am not expert on this but my general belief is that drinking more liquids should help.

I wish you all the best with this and hope she recover fully soon

    On the funnier side

do you have any idea how she managed to do that. its like finding Cryptonite !
if you know how its done i am sure there are times when you wouldnt mind ur GF losing voice :)

its probably just from lots of singing and smoking and shouting and being boistress.

and not from dogging down lesson street.

Make the most of this special time together & get yourself a cowboy hat, chaps & spurs, & a saddle for herself.

You may as well enjoy a ride while she's a little hoarse.

Happens to me too. I used to get it constantly so I got my vocal chords checked out and he said I had nodules on them. So I went to speech therapy and know I dont abuse my voice like I used to :)

Take a lot of honey. It's supposed to help a lot.

    Lockets will do for now

Try this.. put some honey in a cup of tea and drink it. Even though it sounds horrible, its supposed to taste lovely. It's as sweet as sugar.

I mean, if you are as worried as you seem bout it, probs your best option to try it?

See can you get some stuff called Bee Propolis. It tastes absolutely foul, but it will fix her voice. Opera singers and theatre actors use it. Health food shops might have pastilles with it in it, but the best way to take it is in drops in a glass of water. It turns the water cloudy and tastes for all the world like someone threw mud into a glass of water, but it does the trick.

When told to rest her voice she should do just that - no whispering as whispering can be harder on the vocal cords than speaking quietly.

I lost my voice for 8 weeks once - pain in the neck, after the initial amusement.
