NTL down in Dublin 8

    Hi All,

Our NTL Digital has been down since Saturday afternoon. Customer (don't)Care keep telling me they have a problem on Maxwell Street. After telling me twice now that'll take another 24 hours they've now told me they don't know when it'll be fixed as they can't get access to "23 Maxwell Street". They told me all of Dublin 8 is out so I'll just have to sit tight.

The weird thing is is that the Broadband is still working so I don't know if that means anything or whether they're reverting to type and lying through their collective arses.

I'm missing the cricket and I really really want to see Ireland play tomorrow so is anyone else experiencing problems??

If your NTL broadband is working then the "area been down" is bullshíte.
You should still have your analogue stations if the BB is working.

What exactly is the STB doing or not doing?? Any messages on the TV??

    The analogue isn't working either.

When I switch it on the STB does it's usual "PACE" start-up but then just goes blank. The message on the screen is:

"Your STB cannot find any services. Switch off your STB from the mains, check all connections and switch back on after 10 seconds. Error 1014".

BTW when I told yer wan from customer care about the broadband still being on she said: "That's coz they work on different wires". Right. Thanks.

Thanks for the help Tax Man.

Ask for their name and ask to speak to a supervisor. NTL support are worse than useless.

That person should be hung from numerous different wires for saying that.
Everything works off the same system,if the analogue is gone then everything should be gone. How the hell is your broadband working. Are you picking up someone else's wireless signal by any chance?

I'd assume the TV headend and the broadband headend may be seperate equipment. If the analogue TV feed failed, it doesn't necessarily mean the broadband would be down too.

Much like on a phoneline it's quite possible for your dialtone to be removed without loosing DSL broadband service or visa versa.

They share the same "pipe" over the "last mile", but they're seperate services.

Yes separate equipment in the headend but that's it.They may travel separate fibres to a node but once past that it's all on the same cable. Upstream and downstream are carried over the same cable as TV services. If you loose your analogue service that would indicate that the amp nearest is not receiving a signal(from the previous amp) or power. Could be faulty equipment or a cable cut etc.
The analogue service lies between the upstream and downstream frequencies of the broadband service so the broadband shouldn't be working. Even with problems on the network the analogue would still work well after the broadband had failed due to low levels or noise etc.

    It's a strange one.

Thats been my experience too. I'd guess the problem is in the exchange somewhere.

    Hi SC_Agent
I live in the Dublin 8 area and both analogue and digital are working
So all of Dublin 8 is not out

They will tell you whatever script is in front of them

Bastards. They couldn't lie straight in bed.

My GF was just on to them and they're still saying that there is a major fault at 23 Maxwell Street and that they have no idea when it'll be back. I'll have to decamp to the MIL's to see the cricket. ****balls.

i'm in D8 as well, and i've not had any problems over the past few days with Digital (i don't check the analogue)
I don't have UPC BroadBand for this exact reason... if my TV service drops as least i have the net and vice versa!!

Do you mind me asking roughly where-abouts in D8? I live in the Christchurch area (which isn't anywhere near Maxwell Street anyway)

I'm in D8, St. Augustine St. (near the Brazen Head) specifically, and I havn't had any probs other than broadband being down for a couple of hours. I have heard alot of complaints about the service but to be honest I've had no problems. I'm not trying to sound patronising in any way but it might be worth persuing it a little further i.e ask for a supervisor in customer care.

I did ask for a supervisor but I've been told twice now that there was none available. Seemingly they were all "in a meeting". All day. For 2 days solid. Yeah right.

The girl in customer care told my GF that they won't send out an engineer if there is a area fault reported. She wouldn't accept that since our neighbours' cable is working then it's hardly an "area" fault. She told us that if she puts in a request for an engineer they'll just ignore it. Charming.

I've given up to be honest. **** it, i'll be rolling one up tonight together with 2 series of Spaced on the DVD......
