Yeah it's insane. I wipe it off only for it to be covered in dust seconds later!

Leave the thing collecting dust for about 4 months and you'll have a really groovy furry PS3. EAt your heart out elite edition 360!

Its down to static, like how standard TV screens attract dust.

Havent got a ps3 yet, does the power connector use only 2 or all 3 prongs? If it isnt connected to ground it may be that the case has a slight charge which is attracting the dust. If that is the case you can probably fashion a grounding strap if it really bothers you, just loosen a case screw and attach there (if the case is plastic get one that attaches to the internal frame which should be conductive metal that is ground).

Another tip might be to clean your house so there is less dust :P

    The dust is outrageous!

    What about some skins? http://www.decalgirl.com/browse.cfm/2,232.htm

    would that make any difference?

Rather have the original case instead of destroying it with a skin

that implies there is a grounding issue. It probably wont attract as much dust if you affix some sort of grounding strap (unless it uses a 3 prong power plug). If it uses 3 prongs, then 1 is for ground, and if it has that much build up its likely that the ground is very dirty or non-functional.

ye i dunno..its happening to alot of people here so id say its something to do with the ps3's design..

That may be, as I dont have mine yet I cant say for sure, only ask questions and go on normal electrical principles. Does it use a 3 prong power adapter or only 2? Not what plugs into the wall but what powers the device. Many consoles in the past have a transformer that feeds DC into the game unit, if it has that its 2 conductor.

If that is the case, a grounding strap can come in handy if this really bothers you. Course if there is a static charge on the case then that may cause problems for other things, such as frying some electronics with a static discharge.

A grounding strap is usually a wire braid that is affixed to say a case screw (which must be connected to ground/earth) and then to ground/earth in a power receptacle or straight to a big spike in the ground.

I cant believe that this quantity of units would have been shipped if there were such a problem, but I do know that with my desktop when I had it connected without a ground I could feel the static on the case and even when I plugged my phone in via usb I could feel it on my phone and such. That was something I didnt experience in north america under similar conditions. It may be the difference in the electricity (lower amps but higher voltage here) although its probably that its not as 'clean'.

Were there problems that can do anything you can bet there will be a recall, much like the flaming xboxes (I think it was the xbox), or the dell and apple systems (toshiba batteries in both iirc). That can be a good or a bad thing. If there is some new content lock they want to do they will do it at that time, that may break something else that you are doing (even though you arent doing anything with protected media). It can also mean that you might get upgraded hardware for a better game experience.

i don't have a PS3 but from what I've seen of a mate's, the outer casing looks like its made of the same material as my black shiney Samsung LCD TV, and boy does THAT gather a lot of dust!

Yep. I think it's the plastic. It's super glossy and attracts dust just like my Samsung does as well.

Remember... over 60% of dust is human skin... so you only have yourself to blame.

Its another marketing ploy from Sony - "Your PS3 will automatically get its own unique custom skin!"

Thank you, thank you, I'm here all week.

heh I did suggest above for people to clean their houses once in a while :)

If its plastic and there is static (plastic can conduct, infact rubbing plastic with wool generally is an easy way to make static) I would have to believe that its something internal.

Being shiney black however dust will show more, even if its the same amount anything else has. Dust is kinda greyish white, so on a SNES for example it blends quite well.
