IP address indicating security breach?

Long story but I'll give the condensed version:
I was on a website and when I went to post something I was told that I was autoblocked from doing so because my IP address was associated with a banned member. The problem is, it's just me at this computer. I am the sole user of even the modem that is used to get on the internet.

Is it possible that someone is somehow using my IP address or even hacking into my computer to use what would appear to be my computer to post things?
If so, how do I stop it?

Depending on your ISP (and access method, broadband or dialup?), you will be assaigned a new dynamic IP address each time you connect the modem. It looks like you were given one that someone had previously used to cause trouble there.

I don't understand the idea of a different IP every time you log on. I have hears it before but I have the same one every time. Go to http://www.ip-adress.com/ and you will see you IP show up along with your location and provider.

In your area, for instance, there is a company Permanet, and if you are a customer your IP will permanently show up as an English one. There may, in this instance be many thousands of users with the same IP address. Hence, you may be going on a site from which a user with the same IP has already been banned. It may of course be that a system administrator ignorant of the multiple IP situation with companies in Cork such as Digital Forge or Permanet will see a few contributors giving different details, as they would, form the same IP address and think it was trolling.

Go back to the site and continue to protest with this in mind.

Having located you IP at http://www.ip-adress.com/ you might try to do a Google search on it and see if it has appeared on any other sites.

Can you say what site banned you? Who your provider is? There is also a method of using a proxy that may be helpful. Go to http://tools.rosinstrument.com/cgi-proxy.htm and enter the web address you want to surf. It takes a few seconds longer. If there is a problem with one of the random proxies just try again, i.e. close the window that opened when you hit 'start surf' and try again. The proxy selector will try a new proxy for you. These IP addresses are not traceable. Proxies are not secure and eavesdropping may occur. Do not use this for private use. For posting messages on boards where your IP is banned, it is excellent.

    Hope this is of use
    Jenny

Could either be what Aidan said or your ISP is Natting your address somewhere along the way, or using a transparent proxy and your banned friend has been using the same ISP, hence banning you in the process.

Try using TOR to get back on the site.

Keep in mind that TOR may slow you down, depending upon peak user times...
