Doctor J Custom, that is ;)

    1.jpg

    Ingredients:
Trans black ash body off ebay
Quartersawn maple neck, blank ebony board, reverse headstock from Warmoth
20 year old Kahler trem swiped off my old Aria
GFS High output PAF (surprisingly nice pickup)
    Gotoh lefty tuners

Set up single humbucker, volume and tone, no messing, it's all about the riffs baby :D

    2.jpg

Basically just needed a reliable, durable chug machine cos I'm not bringing the Eggle to gigs and I needed a trem :p

    3.jpg

And with it's Evil Twin... sort of :)

Thankee, still needs a fair bit of breaking in but it feels very nice and sounds as it should down in B :)

Nah, tune it to A, that's where it's at nowadays.

Love the fretboard too, a man after my own heart. ;)

Tabs? Trust me, man, it's the sort of stuff a deaf man can work out by ear ;)

    If he is Beethoven

    Very cool, Dr J!

Is the white one yours too and if so why two guits so similar (not that I'm suggesting you'd actually need a reason or anything :p ) ?

Also the trem bar on the black one looks strong enough to be used to jack up your car.;)

We're getting close to gigging and although I haven't broken a string since I can't remember when, a stage is not the place to be without a backup. The Gibbo V is sweet but the low string was like spaghetti when I drop tune it, so I needed something with a trem and Fender scale and I wasn't going to route the AmSe for the Kahler ;)

Like Karl I love the Ebony Fretboard but I can't get used to the upside down headstock. It looks upside down FFS ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Yeah, it takes a bit of getting used to from a playing side too :D

**** it, it's like that and that's the way it is... as the song says :p

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

I like it upside down :D

After 18 years, it's my first ever reverse headstock. I feel so unheavy metal, I should hang my head in shame :D

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Hang it in a rocking fashion :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

The compound radius will take a bit of getting used to. It's grand down the low end but a bit flatter, 16", than I'm used to up north ;)

Lovely axes Doc. Dropped A. Holy Moses. Why not just buy a baritone?

No need for a baritone really. I play in A most of the time these days, and 25.5" is perfectly fine. Mind you, and lower and it doesn't seem to work too well there.

Yowzers. When I tuned my Gretsch down to D, it went all floppy on me.. I guess that's cuz of the shorter scale. I suppose if I go up to 12s it wouldn't be so bad.

    Cheers :)

I'm a bass player. When a guitar is tuned to E, it's all twang to my low frequency lovin ears, so down it goes, I just really dig low sounding stuff. I've got baritone strings on it 62-12 and I thought about longer scale but it's just right at the moment. Quite a few guitars have been bought and sold to arrive at this point. Now I know what I likes :p

thats really nice man, fair play, how much did it cost to make that bad boy, looks very "Andreas Kisser" like

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

About €450. The neck was over half of the total cost. With a bit of shopping around, the rest of it was surprisingly cheap to acquire, but still quality parts.

pretty good deal for a one off, fair play, looks real nice

But you need to have one with a maple board! :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,993 ✭✭✭Johnny Storm

    Hmmmmm..... maple board!

Dr J, how were the frets on the Warmoth neck?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Looks fantastic Doc, definitely going to have a go at something similar myself methinks over the summer.

Pretty good, after a level and dress. I don't think they'd be ready to rock as supplied. I got the 6105 frets, narrow and tall. The ends weren't angled off that much so you could really feel em as you move your hand up and down the neck. I filed a bigger angle in and did a level, crown and dress, then a fair bit of steel wool work along the ends to make it feel a bit broken in. It has a very new feel to it when you take it out of the box. It is a very comfy neck though. I've been playing it for a couple of days now and I'm getting used to it. I like it a lot.

Were any of those guitars used to record the track on the Acrid Nebula homepage? Cuz that's a pretty cool sound.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Thank you kindly. I used the Gibson V at that rehearsal. I'll be in the studio next week recording a couple of tunes and I'll be using the new strat on them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

    FFS!.............

I always just happen to log on to boards when there's a massive Strat pics thread going on.
The blue one ain't mine, I'm just curing some electronic issues for a mate,

Uh-huh. You better not be telling lies, boy, you know better than to lie to me about Strats. :p

Man, I can't imagine having 3 Strats just sitting there on my bed. I can actually. Either way I'd go nuts.

Had a good look at that pic again - that's just total Strat porn.

    *sigh*

    Cold showers, cold showers....

And who's your "friend"? I didn't know you had any "friends" with nice blue Strats? Huh? You better come clean! :p

Edit: does that sound like the missus nagging? :p

Looking forward to hearing the results.
