Not a BA, however, most people in here would have bought from a BA I reckon.

Kept having trouble with my drive not been recognised, was intermittent. Looked on the web, loads of issues with any external drive. No real solution.

Had a chat with my brother, a hardware geek with a very pointy hat. He said that 80% of returns for faulty drive are where they are not faulty.

Solution: Unplug everything, allow static to dissipate (his works were 'Make a Coffee') and then plug everything back in.

Did this, hey presto all works fine. apparently its something to do with the difference in current from a powered usb device and the current offered from the PC, static can confuse things. In his opinion USB is fatally flawed in this area and needs replacing.

Just so you know, I tried my drive on 2 pc's and it didn't work, even though I did unplug, you have to uplug and leave it a wee while.

Actually static can affect all kinds of things.. as in dead system! No post video etc but does get power? Reseat the ATX coonector on the board usually sorts, sometimes just reseating the kettle lead at the back of the PC will sort out too!

Damn static.. i blame too many people wearing nylon tracksuits :D

Unplug all USB connections to PC and then plug in HDD and see if it works.

Naa, didn't work. You have to remove the plugs at the socket and then make a coffee. Coffee is the very important bit.

I don't like coffee. Does this mean my hard drive is screwed?

Funny enough my 2.5 usb powered drive is fine. However I used to have problems with windows 2000 and external drives and finally figured out that is was the Windows USB driver stack that was faulty. I kept getting write errors when transferring large files and had to completely uninstall all usb devices and reinstall to get it to work properly.
