Laptop for personal and protools

I want to get a mac laptop for college work, general personal use like broadband internet, and recording music . We already have protools with a digidesign rack and all at home , so I'd be using that. As that would be the primary memory muncher and all, and seeing the problems it caused on my bro's computer because he didn't have a breeze what he was doing, what'd be the best one to get?
I've about a grand and a half( 1600 max) to spend, and I'd like to keep this lad working for years to come. I have no clue what I'm doing and I don't trust anything I hear from apple.
The student scheme at trinity offers decent enough discounts, so price range may be a bit misleading.

Check the apple refurbished ones too from the apple website same warrany as a new one. dunno how the student discount compares.

Not getting much response on the laptops forum, so I'll move it over to the Mac forum.

Unless you want the larger screen, I'd suggest a 2Ghz Macbook over a Macbook Pro.
Gives you more money for extra RAM, and the HDD is user-upgradeable too.
