Just a quick one. I got a notice from an post saying to return to them a form to fill out saying if I have a T.V licence. Now the t.v in the house is not mine (its the gf's) nor is the subscription for cable (gf also), but my name is spelt correctly etc on the notice. They give me 14 days to reply to it. I do have an extra-vision account but do not know where in earth they got my name from.
Also is it best to ignore the notice or should I fill it in. The questions are is there a TV at the premises and is there an aerial or cable etc. Well yes there is but its not my cable.

Nobody likes paying the exoberant price for the poxy licence but just pay it. I would like to know how they got your name too, is the house in your name?

They get the information from the electorial register and the census.

Also, as regards to paying your television licence, don't bother. An Post were responsible for bringing people to court and were making a loss in solicitors fees and all the rest as people would just buy the licence before the court date and there was little they could do.

As a result an Post stopped prosecuting. Do you know anyone who has been brought to court recenty?

RTE countered with this hoo-haw ad campaign, could you live with the shame etc. But they've no teeth. I've had final demands for about two years. Don't bother.

If the house is in your name then you are responsible for the licence.

The TV question I get as the TV licence relates to you having a receiver, but as to why they ask have you got an aerial or cable I don't know

Well Its the gf's Tv so why didnt they send it under her name?
I was thinking of just not bothering sending the notice back since they will probably do this to everyone now that the register of electors is updated. Also no inspector called or anything so! Basically they got my name from the register and said oh he must ahve a tv so we will send this notice that he has to reply within 14 days. Well if it is not my tv surely I dont have to reply within 14 days. Also if I paid it, then I am going to have to pay it for ever more.? what ye think?

I don't have a tv in my place, but the previous tenant did and I was on to An Post and they said an inspector would be around to check and I said is it just the tv, as it said something about a cable or some receiver in the letter and he just said don't worry, he'll just be looking for a tv. I don't want to get done though if I have something that I shouldn't (and don't use) if a grumpy inspector comes around!

Just read a letter addressed to previous tenant (her sister just sent a text to say I could:p) and it was from the tv license saying the license for this house has been revoked from Jan 31, 07 due to two failed Direct Debit attempts because insufficient funds in the bank account (previous tenant left the country) so the inspectors have been made aware.

However it says any person in possession of "apparatus for wireless telegraphy", e.g. a television set, aerial/cable company connection/satellite dish etc., separately or otherwise, is obliged to be in possession of a television license.

So going by the bit in bold, even though I don't have a tv in my place, I still have one of these:

Is that enough to get me prosecuted:confused:

    .

what does any of this have to do with xtra vision? lol :D if you are suggesting that is how they got your name then you are severely over estimating the capabilities of the 20 year old xtra vision computer systems! :D:D:D

As another poster mentioned they got it thru the register of electorates.
What I want to know is should I ignore the letter or send it back?

Who owns the house or who's name is on the lease? If there's a TV at your address then you need a license regardless of whether the TV is yours or not. You can avoid it for a while but with a TV in the house you'll eventually need the license as they will catch up with you.

No TV means no license needed.

Nobody, save CSO staff and a limited number of academic researchers, is likely to get access to census information that is less than 90-100 years old.

    OP, who delivers your post?

why? Surely the owner of the TV is responsible and not the owner of the house?

It's not a license for the tv, but for the premises to use the tv.

Everyone with access to the TV is responsible.
