PS3 online problems

I have bought a PS3 at launch day and connected to my 3mb DSL connection I can browse the PSN store no problem but when I am playing online games it keeps disconnecting with a error message. I am using Gaelic Telecom as my ISP and my router is a Netopia 3347WG with the latest firmware installed. I have tried calling Playstation support but they said that they cannot help me and I would have to contact my ISP for imformation about opening the ports for my PS3. So I called them and they dont know what to do either. Hopefully someone reading this can tell me what I can do to fix this problem. I dont know who I can get to help me considering my ISP and Playstation support dont know what to do.

not sure what they mean by ports open?

if you can connect to the game server and it plays for a bit then the relevent ports are already open surely? I don't see a game dynamically assigning new ports mid-game for you to use..although..!

I would suspect an ISP issue or an issue between your PS3 and modem (is signal strenght good etc..put a wireless laptop in the same position as PS3 and check signal - assuming it's wireless)

if your ISP is dropping out now and then it is most likely you are not seeing this as you browse the stores, but would see a disconnect from the server once whatever timeouts are exceeded.

perhaps run a laptop with a persistant ping at the same time you are playing and see if you notice anything on with the ping at the same time as you notice the issue online? (goto DOS prompt and use DOS>ping (IP or name) -t

do you get signed out and have to resign in? or do you sign in automatically? perhaps turn off sign in automatically and see if you are signed out at the same time?

use www.speedtest.ie to check your connection. Pay particular attention to the quality of service, mine is usually at 99%, if its very low that might be why you keep on getting booted.

Ive been having a similar problem and i contacted netopia they gave me a list of ports the following ports to open:

[HTML]Forwarding ports between: 10070 and 10080 (tcp protocol),
    10070 (udp protocol),
    6000 and 6999 (tcp protocol)
