Channel 5 gone FTA today?

I see the old C4 & C5 fta thread has been locked so here's a new one.
I have 3 digiboxes and 1 FTV card that gets moved around as required. This morning I noticed that C5 is available on all three boxes without the card.
Has anyone else noticed this or is it a fluke/testing/whatever?

BTW, C4, C5 US & C5 Life still require the card to view.

Yes but it has to be tuned in manually.

Would FTA seriously want to go FTA though ? Isn't there problems relating to show rights not to mention the rights of sporting events that C5 cover.

Don't C5 have some sort of longterm Encryption deal with Sky anyways ?

Hmm. The freq I gave for Five is just one of the diff Freq for Five. I can't seem to find the Freq for Five which is being used on the Sky EPG which might be the one which is not encrypted.

fair play karl... works for me! bring on monday night football in september :)

Wonder how long this will last. If this does last, its another coup for Sky Digital in Ireland. Correct me if I'm wrong but no one broadcasts Five in the ROI as it is ?

Maybe Sky are trying to strenghten their hand with the creation of UPC ?

I think UPC are lining up to be a real contender now. They seem ot have deep enough pockets to finally do the necessary upgrade work to the old NTL Ireland and Chorus Networks.

I think they are on to us. Not two minutes after successfully tuning it in, the 08 message came up:(

The media in the UK love playing games with the public on this day. Wait till tomorrow and see if anything is there.

Isint there a cable system down in Dungarvan or somewhere that does.

Im suprised none of the deflectors carry it (in place of some of the channels which are now FTA on satellite)

Yeah, I think Casey Cablevision carries five.

You can pick it up fine here in Wexford via a normal analogue ariel.

I can also pick it up via the Freeview tuner in my dvd recorder.

Limerick's RLO did have a deflector licence for Ch5, but lost it due to doing opt-out to local adverts and even sometimes a locally made sport program.

Which was, of course, 'deflected' off Astra 19E analogue satellite...

So is Channel 5 still FTA today or was it just a APR fools joke.

It was when C5 was on Analogue Satellite. RLO TV used an Analogue satellite receiver. It was badly aligned or too small a dish as they got "sparklies" when it rained and I didn't. I kept my Analogue receiver running long after I got Sky Digital, for Ch5. There was more to watch on it then too, or else I'm getting fussy.

Yes, five is still going, it's just encrypted and unavailable to viewers with Irish viewing cards.

Perhaps in the beginning but eventually they were using a sky box as I remember seeing a "no satellite signal is being received" message one time.

My mother (in N.I.) never knew Five existed till she got Sky Digital. Hers was an older Sky Analogue system that didn't get CNBC and C5. On terrestrial there is no Five where she lives and for many years they had to get Scottish TV.

I know I'll be laughed at but if UPC bring in a PVR, HD and a improved channel choice I'll be going back - The sky EPG wrecks my head and having to get UTV and BBC3/4 in the 'other channels' is a pain

Oh and by the way I can't get Channel 5!

And your point is? UPC doesn't offer five either.

I give you Adam Faith's last words on this subject (or indeed anything, as they were in fact his last words)

"Channel 5 is all ****, isn't it? Christ, the crap they put on there. It's a waste of space"
