Almera Timing Chain

    Evenin'

Changing the oil on the batmobile today and had a listen to the fan belt and there was a rattle around where the altanater is sounds like a bearing is knackerd, the car is a 1999 Nissan Almera 1.4 bout a week ago it rolled over to 60k, talked to a few lads in the job weather to change it or not but being a chain it has a longer lifetime than a belt, lad said he has 150k miles on a corolla and never had a chain changed.

    Any thoughts?

Usually chains don't need to be replaced unless they develop a fault. If the noise is chain related it's more likely to be one of the chain guides that is worn rather than the chain itself.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but I don't have specific knowledge of the chain setup on an Almera.

EDIT - It could possibly be the coolant pump bearing that is noisey - this is a common fault with other makes and models.

the tensioners can give trouble in almeras - if you can take the timing cover off and measure how much the tensioner piston is protruding; if it's more than 1cm, it needs replacing

    Didn't the 1.4 have a timing belt?

ya could be right - i might be thinking of the 1.5

the 1.5 definately has a chain. but i reckon the Almera had a belt, engine not too dissimilar to the one in the Sunny.

Might be a bearing in the alternator itself. I had one go in a primera. Sounded like a noisy chain beforehand.

1.4 Almera has a timing chain as does the 1.6.

The 2.0 has a timing belt but i've not seen many of those in Ireland.

I would have thought it was the same 2L engine as our primera which has a chain. Maybe not.
