my mate has a major problem with receiving rte,tv3 & tg4 in kentstown in meath. years ago he had an aerial put up and it brought him ok reception but not great, ie no text at times and some days its unwatchable. that aerial is pointing towards north east direction. i have two quick questions.

would he be any better off trying a south east direction as i have looked up 3 rock and it looked like he might be covered.

and is there any chance he could pickup the signals from rte digital tests.

    thanks for any replies.

He'd have more luck at getting Clermont Carn there - Three Rock would be a bit weak. RTE1/2/TV3/TG4 are on CC in digital too, though.

However, the north east direction is Clermont Carn. I'd suspect it was a cowboy aerial install as I can get nearly fine CC here in Maynooth on a rusty old wideband Triax...

thanks for reply, the last installer said that there was a problem in the area where he was with hills but the house is on a hill. the next door neighbour has an aerial that is higher and his reception isn't great either and he has gone for mmds as a result. i might try for digital from Clermont Carn and see how i get on. i will post back results. thanks

    update on kentstown problem.
tried yesterday for digital in kentstown, and managed to get 60% quality and a perfect picture where the analogue is crap. i presume its comming from Clermont Carn. my mate is getting a dvb-t box and forgetting about trying for a better analogue signal, hopefully the tests will last a while. the box was tuned in in dublin and i didn't need to rescan to receive the channels in meath.

Good stuff. Be warned though that the DTT box is more of a temporary solution than anything else.

    Hello,
I have a UHF (Green, horizontal polarization) aerial pointed towards Three Rock. I am getting perfect TV3 (Ch62) and TG4 (Ch59), but RTE1 and RTE2 are not so good with some ghosting. I am using a mast head pre-amp.
    Any advice welcome.

update to last post. i have managed to get perfect digital pictures with 80% quality using a standard indoor dvb-t aerial mounted upstairs in the house. the external aerial pointed towards dundalk was giving nothing, the indoor aerial is pointed towards dublin, and rte is on channel 54 so am i picking up 3 rock? either way my mate is happy till 2008.

That would be three rock mountain in Dublin. After looking at a map, the signal from Three Rock would be stronger as the terrain is pretty much flat towards Dublin. The installer for the aerial should have at least tried Three Rock. Kippure transmits at what, 13 dB more power than Three Rock and is higher up? A UHF and VHF aerial would have done the job for the irish channels.

Off topic: No chance of english channels there as the hill I live on is between you and Kilkeel and its reception can be dodgy enough at the top of it, let alone in the shadow of it. Divis is less affected by the local terrain but then the Cooley mountains helps to put a stop to the Divis signal.

no need for english channels as he has a sky setup with no card so he gets all the rest no problem. thanks for reply.

Its Kippure you are actually getting then. RTE1/2 are on VHF Band III, channels E and H. Polarisation is horizontal. You would need a VHF aerial for these. Three Rock: RTE1/2/TV3/TG4 are all UHF, channels 29/33/35/55. Polarisation is horizontal. UHF wideband aerial needed (would have black plugs). Clermont Carn possible too maybe? (North, Northeast of you) RTE1/2/TV3/TG4 are on UHF group C/D, channels 52/56/66/68. Polarisation is vertical. You have a UHF group C/D aerial already it seems (green plugs).

Assuming it's mounted outside, Clermont Carn should be fine to pick up. Also, if you want a stop-gap measure for getting good RTÉ 1 and 2, get one of those big rabbit-ears indoor aerials and plug it into the telly. For a a fiver or less, or nothing if a mate or relatives have one, you can get a decent enough picture. Must be in the southern part of the house though.
