Do you know anywhere I could avail myself of some hot water so I can make my fennel tea in the college without having to pay the silly charges of 1 euro per cup of herbal tea that we're charged for in the canteen?

You can get hot water in the Ham caf for 35c.

I'm not sure of any places in the Hamilton that are completely open access (unless you've got keys and/or swipes to certain areas), but I just bum tea off various friends living around campus/city centre..

You have to pay 35c for hot water? I might as well get a cup of water out of the tap and sit it in the sun for a while at this rate. It's strange how such a huge campus can't even spare us a sup of hot water to save our bones from freezing off.

Well, you could just bring in a kettle to college!

Ask nicely on the first floor of the Printing House. There is a kettle there.

You're also paying for the little paper cup, the energy charges for keeping water boiled and then there's the staff who work there. So that's pretty cheap if you think about it.

We have a kettle in the physoc room and were gonna open it to members, 'cept the problem is there's no sink. So you're left with a load of dirty cups. If irish students had a reputation of cleaning up after themselves then I'm sure there would be little problem with your request.

As it stands I'd second pet's advice, befriend somebody living on campus. Or lose the pride and pay the measly 35c.

    .

I do hope your joking.... Cost of paper cup woudl be what 5cent, energy to heat a cup of water mmm 1 cent, time the staff have to fill up the water boiler (3mins to fill the whole thing and turn it on), and then charge at a till. Defo a mark up.

Heads up there's a kettle as far as I know beside the dust offices, before you go into 'the classs rep' computer room. I know there a microwave, me thinks possibly a kettle.

...it's 35 cent!!! Tea is what? A euro? Does the teabag cost 65c??? That's an exceptionately good price (the water) considering it's a business.

For the love of christ people get some perspective.

That's the staff's kettle/microwave. Or at least it was last year, not sure whether the arrangements have changed...

Still supposed to be the staff kettle as far as I know...

Oh and before ye all end up in a big fight over the price of water and cost factors...the 'price' of hot water has been deliberately set at a level to discourage students/staff from buying it (or failing that, to at least make some money to being to make up for the supposed 'lost purchases' of tea/coffee).

Same thing on trains, as it happens.

If you don't like it, ask your SU officers to lobby against it. It was certainly a frequent issue of correspondence between the SU and Catering back in the day. In fact, you are in a situation where the 'consumer' has more power than usual (as price changes have to go to committees, and indeed often the catering and SU people will sit down to go through every price and haggle on it!) so there's nothing to stop you asking.

I wouldn't hold out too much hope, though. This question of free/virtually free hot water was debated at length for a few years and was fairly well settled on the side of 'we'd like to do it free, but we can't afford it'. By 'can't afford' I mean in the context of overall catering operations, not a price calculation on the actual cost of hot water (all sides have long moved on from that point; there's a lot of give-and-take on the catering price list anyway so it's not some pure economic operation, there's politics involved).

You can go in through the CSC during the day. Otherwise you could get lucky and find that they're open in the evening for an event (especially in the next few weeks with all the society AGMs).
