Monitor Problem

When i powered on my monitor this morning it came on ok for a few seconds then went blank. Power cycling it repeats this, monitor displays for a few seconds then goes dark. I've tested the graphics card with another monitor and all is ok.
It's a Samsung LCD, maybe 3 years old. Is it time for a new monitor or can it be repaired. Anyone seen something like this before?

Usually, things like this can be repaired - it actually sounds like the power unit in the monitor. But it comes down to how much it will cost to repair as this can often be more expensive than replacing it with a newer better monitor. It;ll come down to choice in the end.

I powered on the monitor again today and i can see the image on the screen very faintly so it would seem the backlight is the problem. Anyone know of somewhere that can replace these for a reasonable rate? or is it cheaper to buy a new monitor?
