    Hey everyone,

looking for some advice about motorbike touring in europe. Looking at cruisers, what cc would you reccommend be the minimum for my girlfriend and I? Also, what licences do you need for touring? We would be touring for about a month in July or August. I am 22 and hold a full licence. What kind of price for insurance would i be likely to pay. We are trying to do this on the cheap. We would be looking to spend around €4000 on a bike. I know the info i've given is very general but please ask me anything to narrow down the answers. I am very green to all of this so any advice anyone can give would be really appreciated...

    Ken

You will need a full A license. You Will have to get a provisional license first. So it will be hard to do in the next 2 or 3 months. As you didn't say if you have any biking experience, I'm gonna go with you dont. So all I can say is this. DONT FREAKEN EVEN TRY IT!!!!

You need to get training and build up road experience first. You also would need fully comp insurance witch will cost you an arm and a leg at 22 with no NCB on bikes. (Cars dont count)

Riding with a pillion will also increase the problems you will have. You are also limited to the size of bike you can have on a prov license and a full one for the first 2 years.

To be honest, its not going to happen this year mate.

We are trying to do this on the cheap.

    €4000 on a bike
€500 x2 on protective clothing gear
    €500 bike gear (eg luggage)
€1500 minimum insurance TPO 0 years experience, full driving licence.
    €500 ferrys

Not the cheapest 4 weeks (which is what the insurance would cover) in my estimation.

And that is IFF you pass your Full A licence test before you go. Otherwise you won't be covered.

Where the hell do you do your gear shopping
to be honest, if your planing on touring your looking at atleast €800 on the poper gear that you would need. (Boots, pants, gloves, jacket, Helmet)

Agreed. I am taking the gf on a short European trip over easter weekend, with hopefully some more later.

Got her trousers, jacket, boots and gloves in Hein Gerrick in the UK that was almost £500 or close to €700. She then bought a lid at the bikeshow, another €240. €500 does seem a bit optimistic.

He says he has a full licence, do you think he means car? I assumed he meant bike and was asking if he needed a special one for other countries, you know, like an international licence.

Don't think you need a special licence for Europe, and since the OP didn't specify, I presumed they were going to tour the south of France.;)

And as regards gear, because he was "going on the cheap" €500 x 2 is a very reasonable cheap budget.

    €100 helmet,
    €250 suit,
    €50 boots,
leaves €100 for misc items like gloves, etc.

I never said I would buy €500 of gear, but on a budget, €500 will adequately get you started.

You don't. I was thinking that perhaps the op did not know and this is what he was asking.

I'd start with a weekend trip away to cork or galway first, see how you & the girlfriend get on with consecutive days of 100+ miles in the saddle.

i have ridden a motorcross bike for a year when i was 17 and from 17 to 19 i had a little 50cc moped. So i have some experience. I have a full car liscence. I already have 2 helmets and jackets...

Hmmm, it is shaping up to be quite unrealistic at the moment though, between insurance w/ pillion passanger and liscence restrictions.

Maybe i'll get my little 125 virago and wait some years....

Thanks for all your help lads
