Tax refund if you can prove you'll be away?

Someone told me you can talk to the tax office, tell them you're going to be away for a year and they give some sort of refund or payment in lieu.

It's not like a balancing statement where you get any overpayments refunded at the beginning of the year. I think it's something to do with PRSI contributions.

Does anyone know about this? I'm planning to travel il mundo for two years and would be delighted to get money off the government.

    Thanks,

    S

I've worked for a couple of months in Ireland then told the tax office mid year I was moving overseas and got the tax I'd already paid refunded then if that's what you mean? I don't recall having to prove I was going, just filled in some forms and got a cheque after a few weeks.

i would say its the same as when you get your tax back if you go back to college

how it was explained to me was that your tax credits are based on you working for the whole year so if you are going away/back to college in september they reasses them as you have only worked 8months say and you then get the difference back

i thought it was you got all the tax you had paid for that year back but apparently not
