Cycle computer never actually measured anything correctly so didn't hang on to it.
Cyclists spanner broke when I was reattaching my back wheel a few weeks after I bought it, the head snapped off. Most of the rest of the repair kit they sell is usuless junk, although I still have the tyre levers I think...
And the cyclists multitool fell apart in my bag after about 7 or 8 months of commuting everywhere with me, literally, the plastic pin that held all the tools together fell out somewhere in my bag and got lost.

Yeah, I think with clothes you can't go too far wrong. I wonder do those helmet conform to any safety standards...

Yep same happened me - the only thing that has survived is the saddle bag. I'm tempted to get the bike hangers though...

I'll second the waterproof jacket, mine is still going fine after 2 years.

Mother of god, you'd think lidl were offering gold plated cycling shorts, at 9:30 in my local Marlay branch, the hordes had descended already leaving nothing but the above useless tools and shorts in XXL. All jerseys had gone and I thought the jackets were a bit on the bulky side. There were people with stacks of clothes in their hands heading down to the tills. I thought that by getting in "early" there'd have been a slight chance of getting some stuff. Did get some rather nice snap fit reflective bands though.

yeah mens jackets were gone :(

are the pedals any use ?
the bearings felt rough , and there is no way to judge the metal in the axle or is there ?

OK - So I sent the wife down to pick up some of these LIDL offers. She got me the trip computer for a fiver and the one for €20. I opened them up an hour ago. Now I didn't expect state of the art sh1t or anything, but, tbh, they are not great. I hooked up the trip computer with the heart monitor jobbie. The heart monitor said my heart rate was 120 BPM and I measured it and found it to be only 70ish!. It took me ages to get any speed reading as the sensor has to be quite close to the trigger on the spoke. On top of all that, the components are mounted using cable ties which means its only a matter of time before they shift around and become loose. Cheap and cheerful for sure. I'll head out for a spin tomorrow and check them for accuracy - on the off chance they need some time to 'settle down' - but I'm dubious. Anyway, they are cheap, so if they turn out to be crap then it's not like I lost a fortune - I didn't expect miracles to begin with so I won't be disappointed.

EDIT : Just went back out to the garage and lifted the front wheel and spun it for few minutes - no speed reading.................again.

I was in the lidl on Thomsa street yesterday and they had very little left. All the mens clothes were gone and the padded briefs did not seem very padded. The other things like pumps and tools all felt for cheap, like they would break in no time. Gonna have a quick look in Maynooth later for a jersey, not hopeful tho'.

I bought the small pump yestersday. Its very flimpsy and practically useless. Also got the solar computer but I can't manage to set it up. The instructions are'nt the best.

I didn't get to Lidl (Moore St) until lunchtime, and the trays with cycling stuff were still mobbed (but fairly empty) by then. I came away with: gel saddle cover (OK), the cheapest of the trip computers (set it up with the Ikea-like instructions which was a pain, will give it a run this evening and see how well it works), a saddle bag/toolkit (bit flimsy, but meh) and a coolbag (not particularly bike-friendly but I wanted one anyway).

I picked up a few bits at the Lidl on Moore/Parnell St, and it's fairly crap. Got the heart monitor/odometer, the cheapo odometer and the mini pump.

The heart monitor thing doesn't really work, doesn't register anything below about 85bpm as far as I can see, but the cheapo one is on my mum's commuter, and after a few attempts it registers some sort of speed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 507 ✭✭✭murphm45

just one point on the cheapo odometer the sensor yokey has to be nearly touching the wheel before it will read anything it says so in the manual max dist = 2mm. if stuff doesn't work just bring it back. Lidl's are fairly decent about your money back, they just take you work for it and give you your money.

Just out of curiosity has anyone else had a problem with the odometer automatically resetting? in fairness it only seems to happen when i mess with or or leave it a day or 2 without using it. it's not a major problem but i's a pain in the ass having to reprogram it all the time

The more I use the trip computer, the worse it gets. Every second time I get on the bike I have to stop and gently tap the sensor mounted on the fork before it reads anything. As for the heart monitor - I've given up - load of rubbish. I'll probably go and get my money back and put the €20 towards a decent one. All I need to do is find the bloody receipt.

@murphm45 - I never had that problem with the odo resetting- but it's not often I leave the bike for more than a day - especially as the weather is good at the moment.

Ok, after a few days, I'm marginally more convinced about the €20 odometer.
It's true that the sensor has to be VERY close to the magnet, so buckled wheels are a no-no. Thought it was missing a few rotations, but I put it closer and got it to 60kmph today on a slight hill, so I think it might have been me.
Also, the heart sensor only works if there's a conductive gel between it and you, put some moisturizer on the contacts (you can borrow from your wife/gf/flatmate :-> and it works grand. I can't figure out how to get it to display max heart rate though, I swear I saw it go to 170, and the max registered at the end of the ride was 112. Might need to read the manual.

I used the LIDL pump for the first time today. Pure rubbish. I prefer my tyres pumped very hard. The amount of work I had to put in with the LIDL pump was unreal. I've decided to fcuk it in the bin and get a decent Zéfal high pressure pump.

Likewise with the aldi pump, gonna be bringing it back before my 16days are up
