im wondering if there is a button i can press similar to f8 on windows pcs that will get me into a boot menu, or is there an automatic way of re formatting the hard drive with the originial OS cds...
    cheers for the help!

Seem to remember that you have 3 optioins -

    1. re-install (update) the OS
    2. Archive and install (that is it saves your present install but does a fresh install somewhere else on your HD
    3. Completely fresh install (erases your present install)

    Adonis,

If you're seeing the Firewire icon it sounds as if the machine is starting up in 'Target Disc' mode, normally you'd have to hold down the 'T' key at start up for this. If it's doing this on a regular basis, it might be a boot rom problem on the other hand it might just be a corrupted file in the OS. Try doing an 'archive and install, this will 'back up' the existing OS and documents in a folder called 'previous system' so no work will be erased during the new install.

    Good luck!

Before doing anything that drastic try booting from the install cd by holding down the "c" key at power up and keep it pressed till it boots. Quit the installer and from the menus at the top of the screen find Disk Utility. Try a repair on the internal drive from here and when it finishes reboot the machine and see if it works then.

You can also create a new account from the cd I think - not sure on this.
