NTL Recabling (Dublin 3)

    Hi,
I got a letter (yesterday) from NTL, saying they were recabling my local area (each house will be getting a new cable as far as the connection up under the eaves) as a precursor to supplying Broadband and telephone services, as well as TV.

It didn't mention HD TV though, but I rang their sales team, and the rep I spoke to said (to be taken with a large pinch of salt, I guess) they would be providing a HD service "in the near future". She wasn't going to be drawn on a time frame, though.

Anyone else get such a letter in other Dublin areas recently ?

There is a big upgrade going on atm in Dublin. Complete redesign of the old network. It didn't mention anything about HD TV cause the upgrade has nothing to do with it really. They'll roll HD out at some stage I'm sure, when is the big question. Areas around Artane,Coollock,Donaghmede etc have or are in the process of been upgraded. It's happening on the Southside also.

There seems to be recabling going on in Cork too.

The Northern inner suburbs i.e. Wellington Road, St. Lukes, Montenotte etc seem to have significant amounts of rewiring going on.

There are also new kerb-side boxes appearing which are substantially larger and more high tech looking than the old Cork Multichannel gear which was looking decidedly worn out.

Lots of new small booster amps on sides of buildings too and seems that they've replaced taps (where houses connect into the network at the eves)

I've heard that some people are holding out in Dublin for free cable before they'll allow UPC to upgrade cables/run them across their property!!

They're doing a lot of rewiring in Limerick too. They were digging up a lot of pavements around Caherdavin a couple of months ago - unsurprisingly the new inspection covers they put down said "UPC CATV" on them...

I saw one of these in Ballyfermot last week, alongside another which said "Cablelink Type 2"... obviously an older one.

Yes I do look at the ground a bit too much...

Well it's good to see that they're really doing something unlike their predecessors who were all talk and no action.

It's happening on the Southside also.

They were recabling in Drimnagh from about mid November 06 to about start of February
