When you're watching a movie or tv show and cops have only a grainy cctv or photo left to solve the case with. And somehow they managed to zoom into 600% into the top right corner and sharpen it up until that vital final detail resolves itself from a total blur into the licence plate/phone number/address/whatever they've been searching for all along.

I want to know what software they're using or if I can get an action that'll run in CS2.....

the most realistic portrayal i saw of this was a film in which a blurred polaroid (at least i think it was a polaroid) spent days in a computer, removing the blur.

Or if they're using Satellite imagery, looking directly down on top of the car, but can somehow still read the license plate perfectly.

I do spend quite a few quite moments watching CSI some nights alright.. Quiet on the outside, screaming at and dancing on the TV on the inside.

Or when someone is taking sneaky pictures from a car, in an alley in the dark, with a 500mm lens and they come out like daylight, and perfectly sharp. I have to force myself not to shout at the TV. I can feel my blood pressure rising just thinking about it...

At least its not just me then!

What bugs me about CSI in particular is that they use digital cameras to record the crime scene. As far as i'm aware its law here in ireland that a digital image is inadmissable in court due to the possibility of it being doctored. So all crime scenes have to be photographed with good ol' film. A petty complaint i know, but i still think film deserves its props!

I'm sure they're using an image verification kit...

    I withdraw my complaint

I actually learned something interesting from that.

"Enhance. Enhance. Ok clean it up a bit" *click* *perfect clarity after magnifying some low res crap 5000%*

Yes, very annoying. What annoys me more is the computer systems they use in 24 and Bones (holograms, lol). What a load of steaming bull5hit.

Surely any photograph should then be inadmissible. The ability to make a dodgy print and then rephotograph it and provide said dodgy print and dodgy neg to 'prove' it is real was always there.

Oh thank god its not just me who's that anal. CSI manages to piss me off on this count every time. I saw one a while ago where they zoomed in on the barcode of an airplane ticket from a cruddy CCTV image of a guy in a parking lot. Paaleese...

And the other one that gets me is when photographers develop film in about 20 seconds using one tray.

I am so glad i'm not the only one who gets irritated at this stuff!

I've seen the holograms in Bones once when flicking through and almost laughed out loud at how idiotic it was.

One drama I saw recently had someone running around doing a photo shoot with a 5D. There was no flash gun on the camera, but the whole screen went white like they were firing one off.

Ooo the mention of CSI reminds me of the fake shutter sound effects they use... god that annoys me

I remember one episode where they were able to discover the identity of a killer by zooming in to someone's EYE on cctv and see him in the reflection. hahahahahaha!

there was someone in the UK whose conviction was overturned after it emerged that a still from a video camera was enhanced to a resolution beyond the original still; it is possible to process a still to remove lens blur, etc.; but it's physically impossible to enhance it beyond the original resolution.

    i remember that episode lol

do think it's possible to enhance a picture a certain amount, filtering out noise of a certain frequency, enlarging can make something more visable etc. maybe a computer program can restore some limited detail in a bad photo with sharping algorithms. But nothing like to the levels the movies or csi can do

And computers ALWAYS make beeping sounds when passwords are entered and "Password Accepted" messages are shown.
