Just over 1 year ago we noticed a water stain on our ceiling just under the ensuite. By the time we saw the stain it had dried out and it never got any bigger, so we forgot about it. :o

Tonight we have noticed a fresh water stain in the same place as the previous one. Now I know that the problem has to be dealt with, but my question is why did the leak stop for well over a year and suddenly start up again.
Surely a leaking pipe leaks continuously?

It might not be a leaking pipe. The seal around the shower or bath could be bad. Also, check any tiles that water hasn't accumulated behind them.
