If you get a bike like a Gixr restricted I believe you pay the equivilant full insurance for that group. A gixr 750 is group 16,
    BTW I have a mint 88 gixr 750 for sale, 29,000 miles.

Nah, thats wrong. Well, partially wrong.

If you get a factory restricted gixxer then AON Quinn and EBike will recognise it and give you the corresponding grouping (most likely 6).

There is a couple around, and the ZX636 is also available as Factory Restricted.

One Gixxer appears to be for sale on Biker.ie.

If you were interested in a FR Suzuki SV650 I know of one that could be sold.

Carol Nash have groupings on their website - these are the english groupings and they apply them here too. They go from 1 to 17.

The Irish/European ones go from 1 to 12, with pretty much anything in the sports category being 11 or 12.

Factory Restricted (see my post above) bikes are in group 5 or 6, with the Bandit, GS500, ER5 type bikes for example being 5 and the ER6n, zx636, Gixxer6, SV650 type bikes being group 6.

can the factory restricted bikes be derestricted by a normal bike shop or do they have to be factory deresticted

My SV just needs the ECU to be replaced - straight plug out plug in job. Suzuki charge €700 odd for one, or you can buy second hand on fleabay.

The Gixxer is simmilar - but apparently needs a small bit more work to the throttle, and perhaps the downpipes.

No big deal, and easily done by yourself.

Do some research into how to derristrict any bike you are looking at buying.

They (FR) retain their value better than their derrestricted ones do.

If you want a SV, you can buy mine.

Who would want to restrict a CBR 600 or Gixr 750 anyway, It would be worse than riding a scooter.

    None?

Seriously, ring them all, Quinn, Aon and CN.

Offer to do the assessment courses to get the discounts (25% - AON/Quinn)

Play the quotes off aginst the other companies.

Take the cheapest (that suffices your needs)

That's the only way to reduce the high prices.
Never accept the first renewal quote.

    thanks

are quinn doing bike insurence now?? or they owned by aon???

Yes they are doing insurance but they are independent of AON. So you have Carole Nash, Aon and Quinn. There's a company called E-Bike insurance who will be coming into the market sometime too.

thinking about buying a kawasaki zxr 400 what cc would it have to be restricted down too and would the restrictor really slow down the bike

You don't restrict the cc, you will have to restrict the bike's power to 25kw / 33hp. I don't know how it'll affect the performance on your bike though.

On the average 600cc bike you'll knock the power down by half or more.

Top speed will be about 160kph or 100mph but due to power and the lack of it, this can be determined by the prevailing winds because you've guessed it the bike just can't fight the wind at that speed.

Going too much higher then 600cc when looking for a restricted sports bike is entering silly territory. If only because you'll have prats in their boy racer machines trying to race you all the time.
