Copying Video onto an portable player

    I want to buy a portable player like an MP3 player which will let me look at some tv programs that i have recorded on a Dvd harddisk recorder. ( like the one mentioned here in bargain alerts

    How do I copy the DVD onto my computers hard drive and then onto the portable player ?

    What specifications of player do I need to get in order to be able to play the movies on it - ie avi files , div x etc.

    Can anybody please recommend a good reasonably priced portable player?
