Right,Im not in the Reserves yet but will be soon.I just wanted to discuss the fact that the reserves are allowed on peacekeeping missions in what 3 years?

Does anyone think there will be a more stringent training process now that they will be basically getting some of the same tasks as the p.d.f ?

Anyone have any opinions on this ?

    Bob

unless your a specialist you'll be waiting alot more than 3 years to be honest

And until they set up employment protection, not only for peace enforcement missions but also for year round training the reserve won't be going anywhere.

Also you'd want clearly defined aftercare support should you be injured and you'd want to make sure you are paid equally with the PDF lads and lassies.

i going to be joining the reserves soon and i think i might go on a peacekeeping mission as kind of a gap year, it would be a sobering experience to see the poverty these people live in

Sorry, what?! The Army isnt a Butlins camp for you to get all teary eyed and realise that we won the birth lottery. I dont know where you got your info but you cant join for a gap year in Ireland. You can in Britain but that's being phased out.

What about all the prep that goes into one of these ops?! Sorry but I dont know where to begin dispelling the rubbish you've picked up.

As Bundy said you'll be waiting at least three years for a chance to go abroad with the RDF & there'll be many hundreds in the queue in front of you, so to speak.

You might be better off volunteering with an NGO.

Unless you are a specialist (Doctor/engineer/Medic/Drops Driver)you won't be going anywhere for a while..I'd say even longer than 3 yrs away..

And at that it'll only be those in the integrated reserve who will be eligible (they'll be getting a lot more training and will be in effect a reserve company of a PDF battalion,(for those who don't know)), the non integrated reserve won't get a look in.

I was referring to GOAL & the like, not security firms.

    RULEDBYJAMES calm down mate!!

the question i have for you is ARE YOU IN THE RESERVES?????

because if your not i strongly suggest you shut up

gap year may not have been the best word to use so sorry about that everybody

i realise my post may have not been clear enough as to my intentions i said i MIGHT go on a peacekeeping mission but i did not specify when! i realise there may be a significant waiting list,so next time read before you type!!

Im very calm and I thank you in your interest on my mental and physical well being.

Yes, I am in the reserves and have been going on 2 years. See, the thing is that you were very very unclear on what you were trying to say. To go on a Peacekeeping mission with the U.N in the next five years (unless you're highly qualified in a certain field and in the RDF), you would have to be in the PDF (full time Army). Once in the PDF, you will have to live up to your contract and serve your years. All in all, your idea of a gap year Peacekeeping is that you serve 4 years in the Army with as many tours as you can grab.

If you're looking to be humbled by extreme poverty, join an organisation like Trocaire and go to places like Sudan, or if you're feeling adventurous then head to Limerick! Oh snap, did I just go there?!

He was, but in a fit of un-charactaristic kindness I unbanned him.

He then went on a troll fest which has earned him a perm ban from the forum.

We have a good crowd here who enjoy the forum and we can do without the likes of him.
