For me it has to be anything that Singapore Airlines is:

    - great service
    - probably best entertainment system in the air
    - good safety record
    - always innovative
    - one of the greatest Airports to Transit
    - usually on time

    What would you want more?

Friendly staff and value for money as mentioned, would be the most important to me. An airline that has the same ideas and goals across the board, less disruption.

Value for money sure but Customer Service is an absolute must, something the likes of Ryanair are very lacking in, ive travelled with a lot of different airlines and my personal favourite are BMI, overall this airline is excellent, value for money, good customer service, good timekeeping (in my experience anyway)overall a good airline to fly with.

Obviously the likes of Emirates, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Etihad Airways, Air France, Virgin,,etc are probably head and shoulders above the rest (Etihad are really good)ive heard American Airlines are good as well, im flying with them next week so should be interesting, also heard they are one of the biggest as regards legroom?;)

I flew on American Airlines a few times from Chicago to Dublin, it was an Airbus A330. They claim to have more room alright (maybe they do) but didn't notice much myself.:(

    Was it a 767. They don't have any A330's.

As for more legroom, well you wouldn't notice. They did away with their "More Legroom Throughout Coach" program and whacked the extra seats back in ;)

I recently flew AA founf it fine. The leg room was very good 767-300 DUB - Chicago but the entertainment was on tvs in the cabin which is not good.

My ideal airline would have to have:
Good Entertainment System ideally on demand if not seat back tv with a choice of games and channels.
Decent food on long haul flights
    Free drinks
Good frequent flyer programe that allows you earn miles on a partners airline even if its a service competing with theirs. (BA wont let you earn miles if you use AA to fly to america from Ireland)
Good boarding proceedure not a scrum and a run for seats and storeage space.
    Decenet baggage allowance
Power Points in seats for your psp or laptop.
kiosk, online and checkins without queues.

I know its a big list buts thats it. I Europe SAS is the best airline to fly with and in north america either jetblue, Air Canada or ATA are the best.
