Films that would'nt get made now

Or at least not without a severe makeover in attitudes!

I was basking in the "boys-own" nonsense of The Wild Geese (1978) last week, the first time I'd seen it all the way through since its initial release.
It was a Guardian contributors nightmare, lots of middle-aged white men shooting up black Africans to rescue the a 'good black president', where the only gay in the bush is as camp as Butlins and Hardy Kruger gets to say Kaffir a lot. As for women they don't even figure beyond some brief moments at the start.

    Could it be made now?

What other pix would need a rewrite to be considered safe?

    Mike.

Your typical Blacksploitation flick would be strongly frowned upon these days.
"They transplanted a white bigot's head on a soul brother's body!"
You can't make that kind of tagline up.

Great piece of film making however.

    The Birth Of A Nation.

I think it's obvious the films that wouldn't get made these days though. We live in a very politically correct age, so anything that's un-PC could be pointed out as a film that wouldn't get made today. Unless it's done ironically, in which case, you could pretty much do anything.

Strange as it sounds, I think Fight Club would have a hard time getting made in this post-9/11 fear-mongering world. The parts about the urban anarchists blowing up shops and eventually the multiple skyscrapers would make many the studio head shift uncomfortably in their ultra-PC conformity chairs.

Brief Encounter would need a complete overhall because it's not unusual to talk to random strangers in railway stations any more :D Plus, hollywood would bang in a 10 minute lesbian sex scene. Actually, I think I'd really like to see that film...

I doubt Blazing Saddles would slip by the censors these days

Something like The Guns of Navarone or Where Eagles Dare. Most war films these days are about the horrors of war and not about mowing down hordes of Nazi cannon fodder. In these films the Germans aren't human beings, they're sub-human evil Nazi's. Again it's to do with how ridiculously out of hand we have let the PC brigade get.

That was the first one that sprung to mind when I saw this thread title.

    The Passion Of The Christ

Definitely don't think MGM would pick it up anyways.

Rubbish. There's nothing in Blazing Saddles that would stop it being shown.

Also the thread is about films that just wouldn't get made - so it's at the intial green-lighting that we're talking about, not the censor board's view.

I would say Watership Down wouldnt make it through processing today without huge changes.

Mainly because it would probably be aimed as a kids film...and if you read the book (or saw the film) you'd know its far too dark for a kids film.

Blazing Saddles would get made but as it would be done by Keenen Ivory Wayans and crew it would be sh1te. :p

Because they hate the millions and millions of dollars the movie made their studio?

12 Angry Men couldnt be remade without a re-write. (see the tv version as proof) 12 all white jurors are no more in the US.

They still sort of do make those. I mean Undercover Brother and Shaft are definite homages to them. (Plus I hate the term Blacksploitation).
