I'm in first year in college doing civil engineering.
    I'm looking for summer job.
I although after just 1 year of college i feel very unqualified but i would like to get experience of the whole type of work.
Would I be better forgetting about it for another year and just maybe getting a normal job for the summer????
I can imagine engineers, building contractors would be reluctant to take on a first year for the summer because of all the hassle involved.
    any suggestions??
i've searched with fas but theres nothing suitable and they only seem to advertise full time positions.

i reckon first year is too early for anyone to give you relevant experiance.

3rd year (which i'm in) is the year you'd need to get experiance.

no harm in tring tho and fair play for being on the ball!

There's always your County Council for work. A lot of them take in summer engineers.

And really, you don't need to know any engineering to do it (or at least for my summer job - all you needed to do was to know how to use computers).

Irish Rail do a summer "intern" program. You've a better chance of doing it if you have a relation in it. I worked in the bridge section in North Wall (now Inchicore) and SET in Tara St (again now Inchicore).

    County councils do similar.

Chances are you wont be doing much stuff. A lot of drawing folding.

Or if your on site giving a dig iut surveying etc.

Well worth it. Should be compuslary for all eneingeers to spend all their summers as an engineer not just 3rd year! Not practical but it can save a lot of hassle the first day of your new job after you graduate

If you're anyway fit/able, just get a job as a labourer on a site. Will do you a world of good just to walk around a building site for a couple of months and get a feel for how things are done.

    Good money too.
