SEGA® Corporation and Nintendo Co. Ltd. today made a historical announcement that two of the biggest icons in the entertainment industry, Mario™ and Sonic™, are joining forces to star in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Developed for the Wii™ video game system and the Nintendo DS™ system, this momentous agreement marks the first time these two renowned stars have appeared together in a game.

Looks like this is going to take the concept used in Wii Sports and apply it to a wider range of sports. Also it marks the final conclusion of the Nintendo vs. Sega wars of the SNES/Megadrive years.

    An era has ended *tear*

And just when I thought Sega and Nintendo couldn't whore out their franchises any further they come up with what sounds like the single most cynical cash in ever.

    I can imagine the meeting.

Wll we've got the Olympics license. Now shall we make a button bashing game that will sell moderately well just like every four years?

No! Let's take it in an exciting new direction! By bolting in our 16 bit mascots into it regardless of how out of place they are. Look just putting Mario and Sonic on the box will guarantee sales!

By jove you're right. And we can claim it has 'unique controls' on the Wii, replace button bashing with fist shaking. The selling points just keep adding up and we don't have to put any thought into gameplay whatsoever!

Now I know we know nothing of gameplay but call me skeptical when I see a bunch of platform game mascots just shoved into a genre that is limited at the best of times even when developers are actually focussing on gameplay and not on what franchises they can ride on the back of.

Great post. I share your skeptisism. I hope I'm proved wrong and it is a cool game but I don't see the scope for an enjoyable experience, but maybe that's why they are the world famous game developers and I'm not.

I'm ignoring the pimpage of the mascots but another sports game from Nintendo (granted Sega will be involved which could be good or great) could be a real treat... my optimistic side is thinking Wii Sports mixed with Track 'n' Field.

Could be one of the best games of 2008*.

    *If it's released then

I remember back in the day, when i used to fight with friends over what console was the better. I always argued that Nintendo owned for Mario and Zelda, but i secretly loved Sonic 2 and Streets of rage.... *sigh* i miss those days, who would have thought this was ever going to happen ey?

And i hope this game isnt just some half-assed job just to try and make a buck off the olympics, cuz sonic and mario together in a game is too big a thing to screw up.

Hmm, I reckon it could all end in tears, accusations of drug use, I mean is a hedgehog supposed to be blue and run at 300mph? Is an Italian plumber supposed to be able to jump 4 times his own height? And as for a fox with 2 tails and the plumber seeing green dinosaurs, I reckon its time for them both to get off the sauce before the Games, to avoid any embarassing disclosures.
