    Hi all

Does the PS3 play regular (non blu ray DVD's),and also DVD-R etc. The online manual states that it plays

    DVD Video / DVD-VR / DVD+VR / AVCHD

Not exactly sure what DVD -+VR are

    Cheers

yes it does, and from what ive heard it makes them look better then a regular dvd player does - like upscaled

Unfortunately, the PS3 does not upscale DVD video.................yet..
It has been promised later on in the year, but if its upscaling is anything like the 360's......its fairly forgettable..

i think it plays them at 520p ... would that be right? .... no different picture quality quality to a regular dvd player though as far as i can see.

it will display them at 576p, which is the same as any other decent DVD player.

The 360's HD-DVD drive will up-scale the DVD content, but there is no noticable differance if you ask me, it can't just pull new content out of the air.

They've actually gone into a little bit of detail on what they're planning for that. The reason we don't have it yet is apparently because they want to perfect it before releasing it.
Currently there are complaints from users about non-existent DVD upscaling in the PS3. As for the interlace-to-progressive conversion before upscaling, the current player has it already. There was a team at the division for broadcast equipments at Sony that does research for improving image quality by using the NVIDIA shader language. They ported it onto RSX. After Cell does noise reduction and other filters, RSX does interlace-to-progressive conversion. Though the current algorithm has bugs for some video sources, SCE says the conversion precision will be upgraded by future updates. Also the noise reduction filter is currently optimized for video sources with relatively many MPEG noises recorded with a video recorder. SCE knows lack of picture details because of it and will provide new default values for noise reduction by checking recording formats and media IDs for DVD discs. As for upscaling, they are doing the research to develop a high-quality multi-tap upscaling filter that balances the load between Cell and RSX. They also plan to use the non-original luminance information generated in upscaling for HDMI 1.3 deep color.

I'd say we'll see it in a firmware update very soon.

Interesting to see what they come up with alright..
The 360 upscaling is borderline miserable compared to a decent upscaler and to be brutally honest is a fairly crap DVD player. I don't expect any console to provide comparable quality to dedicated players, but I can see a lot of people being interested in this to go along with BD playback (all-in-one shall we say)..
A hardware solution would be ideal of course, but its a non-starter for console manufacturers............something like the Reon chip inside the Tosh XE1s (now there's a real DVD upscaler!)..
But a BD console is a BD console first and foremost, so DVD playback is fairly low on the list for myself.......I'll take the BD playback though :)

    Cheers guys

I'll mostly be using it for gaming but am happy enough if it plays regular DVDs at a standard comparable to a decent SD tv, which from your posts it seems it does

Oh and it seems an apology is due for calling it a Blu-Ray DVD - and not Blu-Ray disc.

The 360 has a hardware upscaler. It's not that bad. I removed a lot of atrifacts on that awful print of "The lady In The Water" on SD DVD. I upscaped it to the exact resolution of my TV. Mind you, I suspect that any upscaler would be better than the one in my TV!
