Next Monday. Anyone know anything about it? Hard to tell from the photo whether it's the Tevion or SilverCrest model they've (apparently) had before...

Was about to tackle softmodding the young fella's Xbox this weekend, but I mightn't bother my orse now. This looks nice and slim, and must be quieter than the Xbox, methinks(?)

I will never forgive myself for missing the one they had just before xmas that had card reader, usb port, divx playback and hdmi upscaling for the same price as that one :(

I saw this on a poster in Lidl, looks nice, price is surprisingly low for these features. The one in the picture I saw was silver. Handy to have a USB port, although I prefer the player/recorder/HDD kind. All-in-one is much more practical and convenient, if more expensive.

Geez that does look good, but does it have support for divx/xvid? And the usb
2.0 port, could you connect a USB hdd to it, not just a flash drive?

Ah jeez peckerhead, ya might as well still mod the auld Xbox, it could be
    great fun!

If it's like the last DVD with USB that Lidl had then you might have problems with some external hard disks. I know a lot of people have been unable to get large disks to be recognised by it. I have one from Aldi (Tevion brand) and it works with a 120G disk anyway but my friend has one of the Lidl ones (Silvercrest I think) and the same 120G disk doesn't work with it. His 2Gig memory stick does work however. All formatted as FAT32 aswell.

They're not normally region free but the Tevion and Silvercrest players have always had region free codes for them in the past so I'd imagine this will too.

Have never seen the Tevion, but the player and remote are very very close in appearance to the Silvercrest model last December, twins i would say.

Assuming it is the Silvercrest, then YES.

Tevion is Aldi, Silvercrest is Lidl. Not the same, but similar.

yeah thinking about getting it myself. wonder would it play HD resolution divx\xvid?

Does anyone have any experience with the user interface in this? If I'm going to attach my HDD to it, I want to be able to navigate through it's contents fairly easily.

Slightly off topic, but does that Sigmatek come with component/HDMI/USB/scart cable(s)?

    Highly doubtful

I went to my local Lidl and it is a SilverCrest player and it does indeed play DivX...there was no mention of HDMI however. Thats me out.

might order something online, have it in my head now that i want one with a usb slot...

the peekton mentioned already looks good but doesn't have usb slot, anyone recommend something similiar with usb input?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,406 ✭✭✭brianon

Well I already had a sigmatek (XS 700) but had some problems with it so I bought the Silvercrest in Lidl on Monday.

The picture quality really is great. BUT it doesn't recognise my Ext HDD (250G) which the Sigmatek did. It does recognise my 2G USB but the same (as the sigmatek) 'stutter' issue with some avis is still apparent.

But the real problem is that it doesn't play avis from the same burnt DVDs the Sigmatek one did. Oh, and it seems a bit slower reading the usb.

So all in all (so far at least) it hasn't been a good purchase.

I have both the HDD & USB Stick Fat32 formatted. I do have another 80GB ExtHDD so I might try that.

Has anyone got this player working ? What config have you ? i.e. what HDD have you ? Anyone notice any stutter on some files ? What brand DVDs have worked for you?

    Cheers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 845 ✭✭✭sturgo

it reads my 512MB USB ok. playback freezes after about 30seconds when watching a divx video

picture quality seems very good & it sees my ipod shuffle. plays avi, mpeg4, & divx from a cd no problem. havent fully tested it with other formats though.

for 55Eur you can't really conplain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,406 ✭✭✭brianon

Well the Sigmatek cost me 70 from pixmania and so far seems far more functional. Do you know what brand CDs you used ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 724 ✭✭✭GinjaNinja

what resolution divx do these play up to.

    Hi Zapho,

The Silvercrest model from Lidl states in the manual that it only supports 512MB off the USB key...... However I have it running a 320GB hard disk with a slight bit of trickery.... the usb device needs to be FAT32 to get it to work the Maximum FAT32 disk is 32GB (Think this is a windows limitation). What i have done is partition my 320GB hard disk to 32GB Fat32 Partition (Labeled PLAY)and the rest as an NTFS partition (Labeled STORAGE). so I just copy what ever i want to watch from the Storage to the Play partition. Its a wee bit messy but it means i can watch from the 32 GB partition. and for 54.99 its cheap as chips. as to the quality of playback the picture is excellent!!! better than a Sony DVD player i have.

hmmmm...I have my 2GB pen (FAT32 formatted fresh this morning) working alright.

As for teh partition on the ext hdd. When you say copy from storage to play. You have to connect to your PC each time you want to do that right ?

Its just I have the DVD player in the sitting room and the ext hdd sitting behind the telly. PC is upstairs.

I got one of these silvercrest players last year, the one with the hdmi output and upscaling. but i cannot get it to work with my seagate 320gb external usb hdd unless i format it to FAT16 which means only 2GB drive space.

What program did you use to format it to 32Gb fat32, was it partition magic? i tried a fat32 format before but didn't think of limiting it to 32gb, if it works you are a legend!

I've found all these divx players fierce flaky :( I don't use them myself but have been trying to get one for the folks

    Anyways, a much better solution:
Get an old pc, anything will do, preferably quiet .. with PII 450mhz or above processor. We had an old dell lying around at home.

    Install GeexBox
    http://geexbox.org/

Or just boot it from a CD ! Its about 7 megs bit, doesn't even need to be installed!! but the install takes about 2 minutes anyway :D

    MY experience with this ?
Plays absolutely everything under the sun (bar drm'd crap)
Connects to SAMBA shares no bother
Recognises any size usb disk and plays divx/xvid flawlessly, even on USB1
Works with a huge range of USB remote controls.

Off topic .. but really cheap and does the job !!

Got one of the Silvercrest players a few months ago. Plays everything pretty well. Brilliant for the 350mb avi files loaded on to a 1gb mmc. Only had one problem - doesn't like DVD-audio, as in my Beatles Love 5.1 Dolby/DTS disc. Starts skipping after 30 seconds. Ah well cant have everything!

I've used MCC03 DVD+R for straight DVD copies and MKMA02 DVD+RW as well Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation CD-RW for DivX recordings, all without problem. Used a Liteon LH-20A1PU KL05 for recording. Haven't tried any audio yet so nothing to report on that.

BTW, for anyone who hasn't found it yet, here's the procedure to make the player multi-region, courtesy of www.videohelp.com

    Open tray
Press '9','9','9','9' on the remote control
Press '9' for region code free
    Close tray
    Restart

Cheers for this!! Does it give you any indication that its happining though? It didnt seem to?

I got 2 of these just before christmas , presuming there the same ones, and in my opinion they are excellent! Running .avi's of my Ext HD on a 42" Lcd and the quality is great!! I did need to reformat my hard drive though to Fat 32( i used a program called swiss knife - http://www.download.com/CompuApps-SwissKnife-V3/3000-2248_4-10485574.html?tag=lst-0-2
It worked ok with my 250gb hard drive , no partitions(although i will be making a 20gb partition ntfs for ISOs as the biggest file fat 32 can handle is 4 gbs), but if i let it just load on its own it crashes, i have to press a button every 20/30 seconds (volume or something) to stop a screen saver coming up. It does take a while to load.

My brothers 400gb hard drive didnt work without partitions, so i split it, 2 partitions of fat32 and it works fine,( if you have it partitioned twice you'll have to drive letters,E:/ and F:/ or whatever, not sure if the F:/ drive, the higher letter, works)
(i think you also need to stop the screen saver like before, but im not sure)

My friend has a 60gb hard drive and it works great with it, it was already fat32, the wait is no where near as long.

Doesnt work with my 60gb video ipod

    Hope this helps!!
