I was the same when I started looking for work after school, it's not really that hard to explain. Just say you started a course and realised that it wasn't for you, and that you are looking for stable employment while you reevaluate your options then blag that you are interested in the field (of the job you are going for) and that you would possibly like to get some qualifications in that field in the future.

For me I did not find it hard to get that first job as I had a friend who recommended me to the HR guys so I had a nose ahead of the field, if you know of anyone who could do that for you its worth looking into. Once you get some experience it shouldnt be overly difficult to move on and up.

You need to think of it from an employers point of view. You say you have no qualifications except leaving cert - so what are you offering to an employer?

Maybe make a list of the type of jobs you think you can do:
Data processing (if you have basic computer skills)
Reception work or call centre (if you are good on the phone and enjoy talking to people)
PC support (if you have good computer skills)
Construction work or labourer (if you like that work)

There are lots of jobs you can get without going to college. Have you contacted Fas to see if there is a training course you might be interested in. They run really good courses and you can get paid an allowance while on them in some cases.

Good luck with your search. Just put a bit of thought and research into it and you will have no problem getitng a job.

If you're looking for 9-5 Monday to Friday office-style work, then register with an agency or two and do some temping. It can sometimes take them a while to find you work, but you can get decent enough jobs through them. eg. I was 5 months doing clerical work in a hospital. Great fun. If you want to stay on longer, then you can apply internally for a permanent job in the company. If you don't, then you can just go onto another job.

As for the college thing, it's not a big deal. People leave their courses all the time for all different reasons. It's not unusual. Just say that the course wasn't for you, no need to get into specifics. If you're going into a different course in September, then maybe tell them that (although if you're not temping then the company mightn't wanna take you on if you're leaving soon); if you're taking a year out, then tell them that (you're gonna take some time to decide what you want to do, and for the moment you want to gain some experience, etc). It doesn't really matter as long as you sound like you have a plan/you've thought it through. They're not gonna wanna take you on if your mind changes as often as the weather.

    Good luck!

The Civil service is currently hiring Temporary Clerical Officers in a nationwide competition.

They're usually more interested in the type of person you are rather then your qualifications.

There would be basic numeric and academic tests to do first

    Check www.publicjobs.ie for details.
