TV3 getting the 6 nations rugby

TV3 could be out to snatch the 6 nations rugby from RTE as per article in last sunday's Sunday Business post.

Setanta Sports could be about to make a bid for All Ireland GAA Series as per article in Yesterday's Evening Herald

If the above happens RTE's sporting tv output could be terminated in the coming years

I think RTE might have to share the All Ireland GAA coverage with Setanta Sports like the way it does with RTE or share it with TV3 as TV3 has invested in Setanta sports

For the FTA sports TV viewer I think TV3 will give RTE more competition in live sporting tv rights which more FTA sport will be available

And for the subscription sports tv viewer setanta sports will offer more sports like never before

It is customary round these parts to include a link to the articles, rather than read selected morsels from the original posters commentary.

    Thanks.

fta keith, you have been warned before. Try only making personal & informed comment or else your clear reasoned opinion or else you can get banned for being very irritating.

There is no links on the web to the Evening Herald

Just type in the Sunday Business Post in Google Ireland for links to the other story

    I was making informed contact.

most of the views on these forums are not quite very clear

Still need a link in your post.... just telling us to google is not sufficient.

    heres the link.

a lot of speculation really but rte are limited to tv licence fee in what they can bid so you could have the scenario as outlined in the article where tv3/setanta outbid them and tv3 cherrypick the irish matches while setanta mops every other game.

If I was in rte sport I would be starting to worry as to what the outcome would be.

BBC might lose the UK rights as well

Terrestrially protected. Can 'lose' them only to ITV/C4.

Terrestrial can lose them, they are on the "B" list of protected TV rights. The "B" only guarantees highlights to the terrestrial 4/5.

The 6 Nations are not on the Irish list at all.

As for the speculation, it always happens.... its normally the rights holders (in this case, the home RFU's) kinda "talk up" that there is competition afoot. Its a way of upping the price.

As for Setanta and the GAA, the All-Ireland Championship is the key crown jewel of the GAA (only the finals of both GAA codes are protected on the Irish list.)
There is scope for Setanta to show some Championship games early in the season, but the GAA do not want to disappear off terrestrial TV, and have made sounds in the past that RTÉ and TG4 are the only ones they deal with in terrestrial terms. TV3, in other words, would need to up their interest in the GAA before it gets anything.

Another edit.... we'll see where Setanta are at once the new Premiership contract is under way this autumn.

The SBP article says otherwise - is the list publicly available?

Not sure what effect that'll have on them - I just wonder if they'd show the Six Nations on Setanta Sports Ireland or their premium channels - does anyone know what way they'll be showing the Rugby World Cup actually?

They've not announced how they will transmit the RWC.

I can just about remember this 'act'. Was it not an emergency act because the FAI sold the rights of Irelands home games to Sky or maybe it was all games?

I read the act a few times before I noticed the word 'deferred' used in the Six Nations Rugby.

    3. Each of Ireland’s games in the Six Nations Rugby Football Championship is designated as an event of major importance to society for which the right of a qualifying broadcaster to provide coverage on a deferred basis on free television services should be provided in the public interest.

To me it is saying the game must be shown for 'free' but it does not have to be live. I presume BBC Northern Ireland have a stake in Irelands games but I can't see why the Six Nations have not the same status as the others.

Perhaps we should add cricket! :D

the RWC will have to be on setanta ireland with the 08 screen for those in the uk that get setanta ireland as itv have the uk rights to all and plan to show it on itv and itv4. setanta have the roi rights only along with tv3.

Not emergency, but the minister got the finger out of their hole after the FAI/Sky deal. The EU allowed for this for many years, it just never got off the ground until someone pushed the boat out. In effect, the Govt had drafted a protected list, but because of the unwillingness of the rights holders, to do the deal, so as to protect their interests. The IRFU and the GAA effectively got what they wanted, but to me, the FAI were punished for going it solo in the first place, they have a lot more of their games protected than the IRFU and the GAA.

Deferred is just that. A good example is RTÉ's coverage of the Heineken Cup matches this season.
The actually rights to the 6 Nations are held by the BBC, RTÉ would've done a deal with the BBC to show the tournament, and therefore, Ireland's international games. Ireland's home internationals are up for grabs before the Six nations, 2008 as opposed to 2009.

TV3 have invested in Setanta Sports, so TV3/Setanta sports coverage is becoming more and more attractive.

TV3 have no real interest in sports, most of the rights that they have held have been rights for sports held outside of Ireland (with some Irish soccer coverage at home).

I don't think TV3 have ever even spoken to the GAA about rights, I wonder if the GAA would be happy to give rights to a channel that has in effect ignored them over the past 10 years.

The business post article was suggesting that TV3 could use their coverage of the RWC to get the rights to the 6 nations, i.e. if their coverage is good enough.

Why not? I'm sick to death of RTE assuming they have the god given right to everything.

This is a bit out of date. TV3 are only interested in supporting very popular sports. Initially international soccer and Champions League. TV3 make a profit without smaller sports why would they take a huge interest in sport. Any TV3 seem to now have a very healthy relationship with the GAA. However RTÉ secured the RWC rights for 2011. There is nothing stopping TV3 buying 6NR.

TV3 have since shown that they couldn't give a flying **** about sporting events.
