Im 18 and have a full Irish liscence. What insurance company am i best going to looking for a quote? Im going to try as second driver under my mams name but would they not cop on and still charge me telephone numbered quotes?

I would say you have no hope of insuring that car legitimately without taking out a mortgage, if you can even get someone to quote you.

It may be near impossible, alot of companies wont insure them any more hands down, your age will be the biggest factor on i too.

If you can get a quote id say your talking in excess of 3k

Without 1 or 2 years behind you on your own policy i'd say your going to have trouble getting a quote. Ring around first and try Britton Insurance they seem to quote the unquoteable.
If all else fails try arb insurance they mainly specialise in high risk drivers like ex cons, stars and all that. It will probably be more expensive but at least they may give you a quote.

I'd say 3k is optimistic for someone who's 18, i know of i 21year old girl with full licence and 2 years NCB who's paying €2470 per year on a standard Glanza third party only...
She's a friend's neighbour and this thread remeinded me that she'd got a glanza recently.
I'd say it can be insured alright, but at a price...

Im 20 and drive a Glanza S and its pretty high as it is, its 1900 but thats with 3 yrs NCB! And im with Quinn who were reluctant to even insure it just because its a Glanza! But give it a try!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,251 ✭✭✭Andrewf20

When I first started driving, Quinn were cheapest by a country mile (Was 25 at the time, prov license, Ford fiesta 1.25) Even with the current motor they are waay cheaper than anywhere else.

Best thing to do is spend an afternoon just ringing around.

    Good luck!

hi, quinn direct seem to be cheapest, my brother paid 5400ish last year 3rd party on a jap import civic(no one else would even quote), then this year it went down to 3200 fully comp just for renewing, they seem to reward renewing customers or something. i was quoted over 5000 fully comp by britton insurance on my car as highest then around 2500 by axa as lowest quote and then quinn direct gave me fully comp with windscreen cover for 1350!!!! Its my first policy!!! just gotta ring around
failing that just do what everyone does and buy a turbo one with non turbo spec on log book, i dont know anyone crazy enough to get the v put on log book

if you insure it without informing the insurance company of the turbo then your not actually insured if you have an accident, just be aware of that

Not to mention its a completely irresponsible thing to do. Anyone who registers it as a non turbo is asking for trouble. You wouldnt be the first (or indeed the last) to try; as a result the cops are onto it. Imagine the kind of sh*t you'd be in if you got pulled over (which you invariably will be) and they had a look under the bonnet, spotting the intercooler? or if you had BOV fitted and he asked you rev the engine? They are not as totally car-stupid as most people would have you think.

If you are serious about driving the Glanza, be prepared to take the hit on the insurance.

Cheers for all the advice lads, ringing around and getting mixed numbers. They find it funny wen me mam rings up saying "I want to insure a Glanza V"!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,451 ✭✭✭blastman

Yep, I'd say they've heard that before, all right... :)

-Axa will not insure me on a Glanza until im 25, even under my mams policy. Grade seven car they say S*ite. Ive been with them on a civic for a year and just passed my driving test!

-Quinn Direct want me to send in the cars logbook before they give me a quote even though i havent bought one yet. Its ridiculous! i dont want to go buyin one and not bein able to get insured on it.

What do i do now lads?

dont buy one, get something else.

I would be in agreement. They are everywhere now, loads of them modified to utterly horrible japanese tastes. And lets face it, they were pretty ugly to begin with.

Insurance companies load them heavily because their natural reaction to corners is to jump in the ditch.

My advice is don't piss away money now while your are 18 on insurance.
Get something a little slower alot easier to insure and build up your no claims and driving experience. You are just throwing your money down a big hole insuring it and its a starlet at the end of the day.

Good advice, but it's hard to have patience when young.
Just keep thinking of the kind of cars you can get in a few years if you save.

well, i was in the same boat with my first car, was looking at stalet turbos (refuse to use the G word as its just so stupid) and other such things and realised that i couldnt be arsed pi$$ing money away so i got a 1.4L peugeot 206. a 2001 model and got it insured in my own name and saved a fortune. now a year later im 20 and looking at getting a skyline and have the second issue cropping up, theres so many of them around so im looking at the less comon RX7. and i can afford it no bother now coz i saved loads with my first car.

i know there is a back door way but i dont know much about.

what about insurance policies with excess??I know a few people who have these and i dont know exactly what they mean but i know they have expensive cars and if they are ever in an accident i think they have 2 fork out the excess or something!

 any one care 2 elaborate on these policies!

I'm legitemately insured on my Starlet Turbo with Quinn, costs around €1900 euro. I'm 19, on a provisional with 1 years no claims bonus :D

    Try FBD...

Im 26 and have a Nissan s15 spec r . Im insured with xs direct, premium was€1650 dropping to €1100 this year with a €4000 excess on the policy which bascially means that in the event of a claim on my policy I have to pay the first €4000.

A higher excess is a great way for young people to be able to afford the premium charged by insurance for high performance cars.

I had a claim on my policy(RWD in the wet) when I was younger (17) and only for companies like this I would never be able to insure a car like this.

I would strongly urge anyone insuing a car though to read the fine print as you will find they do not insure grey imports, cars with any modifications or as with one that i tried to get a quote with, any car which can do 0-60 in less than 10 seconds??????

And when you do get a quote declare ALL modifications , including boykits, non standard alloys, exhausts and even ICE systems.
Or else in the event of a claim an assessor can declare your policy void as you wil be in breech of your contract with them for witholding information regarding the car....and dont even get me goin on any spas who try to insure turboed cars as n/a's........insurance companies are not stupid.

tbh lad i don't know how cos they class that as high power and it's over 25 with a full licence only quote!!

    and for op

I was always after the saxo vts starlet turbo civic vti etc etc till i got a primera and my insurance was half any hb now I'm 26 with 5yrs ncb and any of quinns "high power" cars are only €650 fully comp and thats even the likes of a skyline or 300zx

advice is just wait till you can!!

by then you rob won't want to!!

oh and I had a vts saxo (was for sale on adverts) and d lad bought it off me had his dads insurance for 800 and he was named but that was fbd and they were actual farmers

I had the policy on my focus before I sold it and bought the Glanza. I know they don't have to quote you on the car. But if you already have a policy they have to quote you. When I told them I got the Glanza my premium went from €1600 to €1900 excess only €190, which I think is extremely good considering the power in the car.

thats weird cos they wouldn't cover me on anything they classed as high powered i even told them I'd bought an lsi civic which is about as high powered as my sons go cart and they wouldn't cover me on it!!
