How does one go about sourcing a good summer internship, particularly in the field of biology/geography? Are there many on offer within TCD itself, or can they put one in touch with the right people?

Of ye who have sourceth internships in the past, care to tell your story? How you got it, where you went, if you recommend it, etc..

    (I just don't want a boring job..)

Edit: yes, I've seen the announcement, but that doesn't really apply to me, I'm still an SF..

Talk to the careers service? They usually have quite a lot of information about where you should do some research.

Contact any department you're interested in and see if any of them have any odd jobs that need doing. Don't know whether they'll take on SFers though. Although when I was doing my FYP there were loads of transition year kids running about the place.

    Pet,

Not sure with science internships but the business / finanance / accounting internships had deadlines around mid feb..

But, if you are interested in doing an internship, try the states. Easy to go there with a J1, and they don't have this 'must be in penultimate' attitude.

would canada be of the same mind set do you know?

and as regards internships in states how would you go about looking for one?

There aren't really internships in science though, the thing that I'm assuming Pet is referring to is the SFI summer projects which are aimed at those later in their education as they're not meant as a way of seeing if you like a subject or not but as a way of getting an early start into research. They're fully funded research projects, larger than a FYP and with similar independence on the student's behalf as a PhD student would have. I imagine an internship would be "Make up those solutions for the real scientists. Sort those chemicals onto that shelf. Make sure the lab is clean" as opposed to actually doing any scientific work.

In regards to the Visa; yes. Canadian visas are pretty much on a par with the J1 as a far as I know.

I got my internship through a friend, but just start spamming the HR offices of every company that you can find. The larger ones probably have a set process, with deadlines but the smaller ones might be more flexible.

I worked for a small company and found it great, I had loads of responsbility and learned quite a bit. The bad side is that it was not a well known name, but I have these holidays to get a 'respected' internship (I got PWC).

www.vault.com might be of help as well.

    ?? Not in our case.

The odds of getting them also seem stacked against you if you go to trinity and you're not of the fairer sex.

Also afaik, people finished their SF year can apply for SURE too, though typically it's for JS finishers.

heh, still holding that grudge apex :)?

apex is correct, the bias is great, if there are college run programs like SURE by all means apply but you may be better off putting effort into approaching specific lecturers that do research that you are interested in. do try hard though as this will defo stand to you in the future. you never know you may be able to get something in a drug company or a government run geography type thingy. I wouldnt know much about that though.

dont limit yourself to trinity either, email people in other colleges. Off hand DIT and RCSI are right down the road so you could meet researchers from there pretty easily.

What? Not funded or smaller than your FYP?

Our FYP was 8 weeks, SURE was 12 weeks.

Our funding for FYP was nil, €300 a week with SURE and consumables paid for in the lab (obviously no equipment purchases! :D)

I thought SURE was only for those who have just finished their third year?

And Roro, Guiney did his one in DIT.

As I said not in our case. Our FYP was at least 12 weeks, for advanced materials it tends to be longer.

Moorsy it's Final Year Project (equivalent to arts disseration/thesis I suppose) and Summer Undergraduate Research Experience.
